10-20-2019 “THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH!” 1John 4:1-6
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical definition of Christianity study by defining Biblical truth.
Last week we learned in John 14:6 the word “truth” is translated from the Greek word “alētheia” which means the inner essence and character of a person totally agrees with the outward appearance of that person. As Christians we believe 1) the person and character of Jesus, 2) the words of Jesus, 3) the works of Jesus because all three totally agree with each other (alētheia, John 14:7, 9-11).
This week we learn that in 1John 4:1-6 there are two spirits at work, 1) the spirit of truth=Holy Spirit 2) the spirit of deceit. In vs.6 the word “error” is translated from the Greek word “planē” which means deceit and delusion, deceiving spirit, to be led away from the right way by a seducing manner. “planē” can be described as subtle, attractive, appealing to our fallen human nature, it seems good.
It is our own personal responsibility to try the spirits and discern what is truth and what is a lie (1John 4:1-6). We discern the truth with the help of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13-16, 1John 2:20-23, 25-27, 2Tim.1:12-14).
In Gal. 3:1-3 Paul is rebuking the Galatians for allowing themselves to be deceived into believing their salvation depended on the works of the law instead of solely on faith. There were Jewish folks telling the Galatians they not only had to believe but also follow the Mosaic law and be circumcised to be saved. Today there are many religions who add “works” to faith as a requirement to be saved, such as water baptism. Paul reminds us that our salvation comes from faith alone (Gal. 3:13-14). The spirit of deceit will be on earth until Jesus comes back for the Church (2Thess. 2:7-10 1Thess. 4:14-17). In 1Thess. 4:17 the words “caught up” are translated from the Greek word “harpazō” which means rapture, pluck, pull take.
In Col. 1:6 the grace of God in truth is found in Eph. 2:5-13.
Scriptures used in today’s study:
1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
1Jn 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

1Jn 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
1Jn 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
1Jn 2:24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
1Jn 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
1Jn 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

10-13-2019 “HE IS THE TRUTH!” John 14:6
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical definition of Christianity study by defining Biblical truth.
In John 14:6 the word “truth” is translated from the Greek word “alētheia” which means the inner essence and character of a person totally agrees with the outward appearance of that person. As Christians we believe 1) the person and character of Jesus, 2) the words of Jesus, 3) the works of Jesus because all three totally agree with each other (alētheia, John 14:7, 9-11).
As a Christian we believe Jesus when He says He and God are the same (John 14:7, 9-11). In John 1:1-3, 14 John tells us that Jesus is the “word” and He was with God before creation. The word “word” is translated from the Greek word “logos” which means the expressed intelligence of someone, vocal audible spoken words. Jesus is the expressed intelligence of God (Gen. 1:1-3). Jesus is the origin of everything that has ever been created.
At the 11 minute mark Bro. Leo explains the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) in a way that is easily understood.
In John 1:14, 18 the word “glory” is translated from the Greek word “doxa” which means the appearance of and recognition of a person for what he or she really is. When the Disciples saw Jesus they were in fact seeing God.
In John 10:30 the word “one” is translated from the Greek word “hen” which means one in essence, quality and character, Intrinsic fundamental character and substance of are exactly the same. The other Greek word that translates to “one” is “heis” which means the numerical number one.
In John 8:38, 40-45 we see that we are created with the free will to believe the truth or reject the truth. A Christian chooses to believe all of the truth. Through the Word of God and with the help of His Holy Spirit a Christian should be able to discern the truth. In 1John 4:1 we are told to prove what is truth and what is a lie because there are many teachers who teach lies. There are folks behind pulpits every week who are leading people astray (Jer. 48:10, Jer. 50:6, 2Cor. 4:1-2).
The truth of the Gospel is the grace of God (Col. 1:3-6). The word “grace” is translated from the Greek word “charis” which means the unearned, unmerited, un-worked for, undeserved blessing, favor, gift from God.
In Gal. 3:1-3 we read that there were false teachers teaching that works of the flesh are required to keep salvation, just as there are today. They are teaching a lie according to the truth of the Gospel (Gal. 2:16).
Eph. 2:8-10 explains the truth of the Gospel as simply as it can be explained. When we come to and believe the truth God sends His Holy Spirit into our hearts (Gal. 4:6) at which time we receive the gift of our salvation.

10-6-2019 “I AM THE TRUTH!” John 14:6
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical definition of Christianity study by defining Biblical truth.
In order to study what truth is, it is important to understand that for every truth spoken in the Bible there is a lie spoken by Satan against it. There are three sources of deception/lies 1) Satan, 2) Ourselves, 3) The Culture that we live in.
In Gen. 1:1 we find the first truth of God, creation. The Culture that we live spews the deception of Evolution.
In Gen. 2:15-17 we find the second truth of God, if Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge they would die. Satan deceived them, Gen. 3:4.
In Gen. 2:18-19, 21-23 we find the third truth from God, He created woman for man and man for woman. If we refuse this truth we are deceiving ourselves, Rom. 1:18-32.
In John 14:6 Jesus tells us that He is the truth. The word “truth” is translated from the Greek word “alētheia” which means the unveiled reality that is the basis of and agrees with the appearance of and claims of a person. When the inner essence of a person agrees with the outward appearance of that person.
In John 14:7, 10-11 Jesus goes on to explain to the disciples that they should believe Him because His words agree with His works and that is how they should know He is truth.
Our Culture would have us to believe there are many ways to God, but according to the Bible that is a lie/deception.

Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

9-29-2019 “THE ONLY WAY!” John 14:6
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical definition of Christianity study.
Last week we learned that Christianity is 1) all inclusive (1Tim. 2:1-4, 2Peter 3:9 and Rom. 10:13), 2) Christianity is all exclusive (In John 14:6 Jesus explains that there is only one way to eternal life and that is through Himself.).
In John 14:6 the word “way” is translated from the Greek word “hodos” which means a way or a path towards a destination, a method or manner of obtaining something or arriving at a destination. Jesus is saying that He is the only pathway to God. We can only get to God via a personal relationship with Jesus.
Jesus goes before us in all things, from our temptations to entering into heaven (Heb.4:14-16, Heb. 10:19-22, Deut. 31:7-8).
In Heb. 10:19-22 we read the only “way” to God is through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
In John 6:60-61, 66-69 we read the statement of faith of every born again Christian.
In John 10:9 the word “door” is translated from the Greek word “thura” which means narrow entrance or passage. The way to God and salvation is an individual decision, we, as a collective, can not get through the “door”. All other methods that man has devised are failures. Jesus excludes all other methods or means to salvation and at the same time is all inclusive for everybody “by me if “any” man enter in, he shall be saved”. Jesus invites all mankind to walk through the “door”.
“The way” is a prominent phrase in the book of Acts, Acts 8:1-4, 9:1-2, 19:9, 22:1-4, 24:14,22. The statement of faith found in John 10:9 was the statement of faith for the first Church.
