JESUS SABBATH

Please listen to these audio study’s. This blog only highlights the study and there is tons of Biblical information on the audio study that the confines of this blog can not express.

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there. This is the eleventh study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

Last week we studied the Sabbath and the actions (7 miracles) Jesus did during the Sabbath. Last weeks study was the foundation for this weeks study of all the “oral laws” the Jewish religious leaders have added to the Sabbath.

The Torah is the Written Law of God as revealed to Moses, the first 5 books of the Old Testament, known to the Jewish religion as the written Law.

Mishnah is the oral tradition of interpreting (by the Pharisee’s and Sadducee’s)  the Written Mosaic Law, known to the Jewish religion as the Rabbinical teachings.  Mishnah is where the 1521 addendum’s to the 613 Mosaic Laws comes from.

In Matt.12:1-2 the Pharisees accused the Disciples of breaking the Sabbath by “plucking corn” and “eating” it.

The Torah says they were not to do any work (professional work), gather, carry, bake, boil or roast, plant or harvest (agricultural practices), start a fire, or conduct business on the Sabbath Day. They were to remember God delivered them from the slave bondage of Egypt (Sabbath Day was specific to the Nation of Israel, Luke 4:16-17) (Duet.5:12-15, Eze.20:10-12, Exo.16:21-30, Exo.34:21, Exo.35:2-3) (given by the Prophets, Jer.17:21-23, Neh.13:15).  The Torah allowed them to pluck the grain by hand, for personal consumption, but not cut it with a sickle (harvesting it) (Duet.23:25).

From those written laws the Mishnah added 39 prohibited labors on the Sabbath Day, here’s just a few:  no plowing digging or raking of any kind,  no dragging a chair across the room,  no sowing seeds of any kind, no watering house plants/flowers, no reaping including picking fruit or flowers, no gathering including picking fallen fruit up off the ground, no raking leaves, no squeezing fruit of any kind, no shearing including clipping finger nails, etc.

As you can see the Mishnah distorted the intentions of the Written Law and that’s what Jesus was having to deal with during His 3.5 year Ministry here on Earth (Mark 7:6-7).

For the same reasons we must question every doctrine that our religious leaders are teaching us so we know if it is Biblical or man’s traditions (Mark 7:6-7, Col.2:8).

Mat 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

Neh 13:15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

3-29-2020 “MORE BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE CORONAVIRUS!” Psa.121:1-8

This week Bro. Leo leads us on another study of the Biblical perspective of the Coronavirus crisis that we are facing at this time.

Psalm 121 tells us that even in a crisis our help comes from our Creator God and that He will sustain and protect us.

During a crisis Satan will attempt to isolate us or at least lead us to believe we are alone, like he did with Eve in the garden.  When we feel isolated or alone we must remember that God is faithful to not let us go through an unbearable circumstance, He is always with us and always has a path of deliverance set forth for us (1Cor.10:13, Job 42:12).

There are two directions we can take during a crisis: 1) we can turn away from God and rely upon ourselves and those around us or 2)  we can turn to God, seek God with all or heart and depend upon Him for our path to deliverance (Jer.29:10-13).

God uses our bad circumstances to draw us closer to Him, to strengthen us, correct our errors and settle us (1Peter 5:6-11).  If we seek God with all our hearts, pray to Him for guidance and follow His guidance through this coronavirus crisis, we will come through it stronger and better than we were when it started.

Scriptures used in today’s study:

Psa 121:1 A Song of degrees. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
Psa 121:2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Psa 121:3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Psa 121:4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
Psa 121:5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
Psa 121:6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
Psa 121:7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
Psa 121:8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Job 42:12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

Jer 29:10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Jer 29:12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
Jer 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
1Pe 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
1Pe 5:9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
1Pe 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
1Pe 5:11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

This is the tenth study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

Last week we continued to study how Jesus further teaches the transition of the Jewish folks from the Law to Grace and Truth by putting the Scribes and Pharisees on “trial”.  This week we study the Sabbath and the actions (7 miracles) Jesus does during the Sabbath.  This weeks study will be the foundation for next weeks study of all the “oral laws” the Jewish religious leaders have added to the Sabbath.

In Matt.12:1-14 the Pharisees are trying Jesus again, this time for His Disciples picking and eating corn and for Jesus healing a withered hand.  From these two acts on the Sabbath the Pharisees decide Jesus should be killed.

In order to understand why the Pharisees concluded they must kill Jesus, we need to understand the significance of the Sabbath Day to the nation of Israel.

The word Sabbath is translated from the Hebrew word Shabbath which means to rest, to cease from labor, to bring an end to and endeavor.

In Exo.20:1-3, 8-11 we find the Sabbath in the 10 commandments and the reasons for the Sabbath, 1) vs2 God brought the nation of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt  2) vs8-11 do no labor, honor the day.  Vs.9 is physical and vs.8 is spiritual.

In Gen.2:2 the Hebrew word “Shabbath” is translated as “rested”.  So, in Exo. 20:10 the Israelite’s were not to do anything related to their work, what ever their job was (profession).  In Duet.5:12-15 Moses tells the Nation of Israel why they need to observe the Sabbath Day, when they were in Egypt they worked 7 days a week and they were no longer slaves to Egypt (Duet.5:15).

In Exo.16:21-28 we see that the nation of Israel was not to bake or boil or gather manna on the Sabbath.  Death was the punishment for doing “baking or boiling or gathering manna or kindle a fire” on the Sabbath (Exo.35:2-3).  In Numbers 15:32-36, 27-31 we read about a guy sentenced to death for gathering sticks.  On the surface we would think he was put to death for doing “work” (vs.32-36), but in vs.27-31 explains that he was put to death because he intended to build a fire and cook on the Sabbath (vs.31).

The Prophet Jeremiah expounds on the law of the Sabbath day by adding that the nation of Israel should “bear no burden on the sabbath day”.

In Exo.34:21 Moses tells the nation of Israel that they can only plant or harvest 6 days a week, but not on the Sabbath Day.  Was the Disciples intent to harvest (Matt.12:1)?  Next weeks study will look at the “oral laws” the Pharisees were using to condemn Jesus for His Disciples picking and eating corn on the Sabbath Day.

Scriptures used in today’s study:

Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Mat 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

Mat 12:3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
Mat 12:4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Mat 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Mat 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
Mat 12:7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

Deu 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

3-20-2020 “A BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS!” Psalm 11:1,4,7

During this coronavirus crisis Christians need to respond the same way we respond to any of life’s circumstances, we search the Scriptures to find out how God tells us to respond.

In Psa.11:1 David expresses how his first response to his crisis is him wanting to run and hide from what he fears.  David’s response is often times our initial response to a crisis, but in 2Tim.1:7 we are told that the spirit of fear is not from God.  A “sound mind” (2Tim.1:7) is not to fear, want to run and hide.  A “sound mind” is to say I will put my trust in the Lord.  In Psa.11 David is struggling between fear and trusting God.

During any crisis we need to remember that our Creator God is still on the throne and in control (Psa.11:4).  1) God is on the throne  2) God is in control  3) everything in the world is created by God  4) God is our creator and sustainer (Col.1:15-17).

The coronavirus should be a wakeup call to nations and individuals to trust God, acknowledge God, seek God and examine ourselves and repent (2Chro.7:11-14, Pro.3:5-8).

Just like David in Psa.11 we can depend on ourselves and our Government with fear of the outcome or we can put our trust in the Lord our Creator God (Psa.46:1-3, 7, 10-11).

3-15-2020 “WHO IS ON TRIAL?” John 8:1-5

Please listen to these audio study’s. This blog only highlights the study and there is tons of Biblical information on the audio study that the confines of this blog can not express.

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there. This is the tenth study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

Last week we continued to study how Jesus further teaches the transition of the Jewish folks from the Law to Grace and Truth (John 1:17) and this week we study more of that transition (John 8:1-5).

To better understand what is going on in John 8:1-11 we must remember that the Scribes job was to interpret the Mosaic Law and the Pharisees job was to enforce the Mosaic law (who happen to be responsible for the 1521 Rabbinical addendum’s that were added to the 613 Mosaic Laws, not unlike many religious leaders  and religions today), these two groups were the religious leaders of their time.  They were self righteous, legalistic, judgemental and corrupt.

In John 8:3 the woman appears to be on trial for adultery, the Scribes and Pharisees say the law says the woman must die.  In Duet.22:22-24 we see that the Law actually says both the man and the woman must die.  Now Jesus appears to be on trial (John 8:5-6).

The word “tempting”(John 8:5-6) is translated from the Greek word “peirazō” which means the intention to entangle someone in sin, to cause someone to fall spiritually, spirit of the Devil (Matt.4:1-3).

In John 8:7 the Scribes and Pharisees now are on trial.  Jesus is transitioning them from the Law to Grace and Truth (Matt.5:27-28, Matt.7:1-5, Matt.5:20, Matt.7:24).   Judgement is being taken out of the hands of the Law and placed into the hands of Grace and Truth-God Himself (James 4:11-12).

Paul explains this in Gal.3:19, 23-24.  The Law brought the adulterous woman to Jesus and Jesus justified her (James 4:11-12, John 8:11).

The Law judges, condemns and executes, but nowhere in the scriptures does it say the Law saves (2Cor.3:5-6,3).  Grace and Truth saves (John 3:17, Luke 9:56).

The Law says kill her, Grace says I do not condemn you, Truth says “go, and sin no more” (John 8:11).

Deu 22:24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

Joh 8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there. This is the tenth study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

This week we continue to study how Jesus further teaches the transition of the Jewish folks from the Law to Grace (John 1:17).

In Matt.5:17-21 Jesus explains that the Mosaic law reveals the Holiness of God and the sinfulness of man to us and man’s response to “the Law” is obedience, but “Grace and Truth” reveals the heart of God and our personal need for Jesus.  Paul explains the transition between the “Law” and “Grace and Truth” in Rom.7:7,12-13, Gal.3:10-12).  We must remember when we hear “the Law” that there were 613 regulations Mosaic laws, 248 were commands, 365 of them were prohibitions, there were 1521 Rabbinical addendum’s.

“The Law” was only in effect until Jesus came and fulfilled it (Gal.3:19).  “Grace and Truth” transited us from “the Law” to faith of Jesus (Gal.3:22-24).  The word “faith” in vs.24 is translated from the Greek word “pistis” which means to believe about to the point of trusting in to the point of committing to.  As soon as Jesus fulfilled “the Law” He transitioned us from the 613 regulations Mosaic laws, 248 were commands, 365 of them were prohibitions, there were 1521 Rabbinical addendum’s unto “Grace and Truth” where we are saved by “pistis” alone (1John 5:13).

“The Law” says do this, don’t do that, obey and work (Matt.5:48).  “Grace and Truth” says come unto Me, I will help you, I will change you, I will empower you and I will indwell you (Gal.3:21-22, Gal.2:20-21).

Scriptures used in today’s message:

1Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

Mat 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Mat 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Rom 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Rom 7:13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Gal 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Gal 3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Gal 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there.  This is the ninth study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

Last week we took a deeper look into Leprosy and the Purity Laws.  We learned Jesus didn’t need to do the first three steps of the Purity Law because Jesus is God in the flesh and no impurities can enter Him and He wrote the law, healed the Leper and declared him clean. When God declares us clean we are clean, God doesn’t need any man to say anything. Jesus didn’t break the law He’s telling us the law is fulfilled. The immediate touch of Divinity to Humanity.

This week we study how Jesus further teaches the transition the Jewish folks from the Law to Grace (John 1:17).

Jesus continues to reveal Himself to the Jewish people (John 8:58) and the Jewish leaders wanted to stone Him for not only saying He was Yahweh but also for speaking the name Yahweh (John 8:59), because the Jewish people were not allowed to speak the name Yahweh.

In Col.1:19 and Col.2:9 when Paul says “fullness” he is saying all the Divinity of God.  In John 1:16,14,17 he is saying that Jesus is full of the Divinity of God.  Jesus came to earth to declare God to humanity.  Humanity’s part is to receive the Divinity of God (John 1:16,12,11).

In Matt.15:24 Jesus says He came to Earth for the Israelite’s.  It’s important to know that in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John books all happened under the Old Covenant under the Mosaic Law.  The New Covenant did not start until the day of Pentecost.

When we get saved the Divinity of God enters into us just as it did to the Leper and the woman with the issue of blood.  In John 20:21-22 we see the outflow of Divinity to humanity, but this was special anointing just so they could understand His teaching during the 40 days.  In Luke 24:44-45,49 shows that they were anointed with this understanding and then told to wait in Jerusalem until they received the Holy Spirit (“dunamis” from last weeks study).

In Gal.4:4-6 tells us that if we do not have the Divinity of God indwelling us we are not children of God (Rom.8:9a,10a,11a).  Jesus came to give His life for us on the cross and He came to give His life to us through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit (John 14:16-20, Gal.2:20).

We have the ability to know if God’s Holy Spirit dwells in us (2Cor.13:5) and it’s critical that we know whether or not we have received God’s Holy Spirit.

Jesus’ three and half year ministry was a transition from the law to grace.

Scriptures used in today’s study:

Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Joh 1:15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Joh 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

Mat 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Joh 1:16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
