11-22-2020 “FORGIVE US OUR DAILY SINS!” Matthew 6:11-12

This week Bro. Leo starts us off with prayer requests for those in our Church family and others in our community who have contracted the coronavirus. Please join us in praying for these individuals and their families.

Bro. Leo continues our Biblical study of the Lord’s Prayer by studying the phrase “And forgive us our debts”. At the end of this audio recording Bro. Leo gives a Thanksgiving devotional sourced from E.M. Bounds. Please listen to the audio recording, I can not replicate, in these synopsis, the passion that Bro. Leo expresses in these study’s.

In Matt.6:12 the word “debts” is translated from the Greek word “opheile” which means a debt owed which must be paid. Romans 6:23 tells us the debt for sin is death. So, when we pray for God to forgive us of our debt, for the sins we commit daily against Him, a debt owed to Him, we are actually asking God not to punish us for those sins.

Last week we learned that Jesus was actually teaching two types of “Daily Bread” in vs.11, 1) our daily physical need for food, 2) our daily spiritual needs (John 6:49-51). Notice in vs.12 Jesus says “”And” forgive us our debts”. Jesus is including our need for daily forgiveness with our spiritual need. If we do not confess our daily sins to God and ask for His forgiveness we will be spiritually separated from God (1John 1:5-10). This does not mean that we lose our salvation, it simply means we are not communing with His Holy Spirit, which means we are quenching His Spirit to the point of not being convicted of our sins by His Holy Spirit.

King David describes the spiritual condition of unconfessed sin in Psa.32:3-4 through his experience of lusting after another woman and having her husband killed in battle. After we confess our sins to God and are forgiven, we get joy renewed in us and we are positioned back into the purpose God has for us (Psa.51:1-14).

In Matt.6:12 Jesus goes on to say “as we forgive our debtors”. When we pray this to God, we are pledging to forgive others who sin against us. Jesus describes this point in a parable in Matt.18:21-35. This does not mean that Christians should allow themselves to be run over or walked on like a door mat. Just as God forgives us of our sins against Him, He also chastises us of our wrong doings and Christians should do the same to those who sin against them.

In Luke 7:36-48 Jesus emphasizes the spiritual importance of maintaining an awareness of our sins against God. In 1Tim.1:15 Paul describes the mindset we should maintain about our daily sins.

Thanksgiving Devotion

In Psa.26:7 the word “thanksgiving” is translated from the Hebrew word “tôdâh” which means A sacrifice of thanksgiving offered physically in praise & prayer by outstretched arms, palms upward. To confess: sin, one’s need for God & deep gratitude. To both offer& to expect to receive. Todah is an outward physical offering that reflects an inward posture of the mind and heart. We offer “Todah” unto the Lord as sacrificial praise & thanksgiving.

It is God’s will for us to be a grateful people in any circumstances we may find ourselves in (1Thess.5:13-16).

11-15-2020 “GOD’S DAILY BREAD!” part2 Matthew 6:11

This week Bro. Leo starts us off with prayer requests for those in our Church family and others in our community who have contracted the coronavirus, as well as Dr. Joe Hall who passed away this week from the coronavirus. Please join us in praying for these individuals and their families.

Bro. Leo continues our Biblical study of what Jesus was telling us when He prayed for “Daily Bread”.

Last week we learned that the Hebrews related the phrase “Daily Bread” to the manna their forefathers received daily from God for the 40 years they were wondering the wilderness and how the daily manna taught them to trust and obey God.

This week we learn that Jesus was actually teaching two types of “Daily Bread”, 1) our daily physical need for food, 2) our daily spiritual needs (John 6:49-51).

From the days of Moses forward the Rabbinical teachings taught that the Messiah would be Moses like, He would perform all the miracles that Moses performed (Duet.18:15, 18),. So, when Jesus fed the 5k using only five barley loaves, and two small fishes the Hebrews recognized Jesus as the Messiah (John 6:9-15).

At this point Jesus introduces them to their daily spiritual need, Himself, and how their spiritual needs were greater than their physical needs (John 6:26-33, 47-54). In Matt.4:1-4 puts His spiritual needs ahead of His physical needs when Satan tempts Him in the wilderness.

When we pray for our “Daily Bread” we are praying for our physical needs, but more importantly we should be praying for our spiritual needs (Psa.34:8, Psa.42:1-2,8, Psa.63:1-8).

11-8-2020 “GOD’S DAILY BREAD!” part1 Matthew 6:11

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of the model prayer that Jesus presented to the Disciples. This will be a 2 part study, the first part will look at what the “daily bread” meant to the Hebrews that Jesus was talking to and the second part will be what the ” daily bread” means to Christians in the Church age.

The Hebrew understood that their being was sustained by God daily (Lam.3:22-26, Psa.23:6, Psa.68:19). They knew this from their history of wondering the wilderness for 40 years (Exo.16:1-4, 16-30, Josh.5:9-12). They knew that God sustained an estimated 2.4 million Hebrews for 40 years in 42 different campsites (Exo.12:37-38).

So the phrase “daily bread” in Jesus’ model prayer was an acknowledgement of God sustaining them daily in life, to the Hebrew. And it reminded them that God will supply all their needs (Phil.4:19), because the Hebrew’s had a history of not always believing in God and believing not in His salvation (Psa.78:22-26).

For us today the phrase “daily bread” is also an acknowledgement of our dependence on God to sustain us daily (2Cor.3:5, 2Cor.9:8). Just like the Hebrew, we need to keep in mind that God sustains us daily (Acts 17:28).

11-1-2020 “THY WILL BE DONE!” part2 Luke 11:2

Luke 11:1-2

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study of the Lord’s Prayer by taking a deeper look into the phrase “Thy will be done”.

In Luke 11:2 Jesus prays that God’s will be done on earth the same as it’s done in heaven. In heaven there are two groups, 1) Angels 2) Saints. These two groups live out the will of God 1)perfectly, 2) completely, 3) willingly. In Psa.40:8 the word “delight” is translated from the Hebrew word “châphêts” which means to do something joyfully or cheerfully, finding pleasure in doing something. The Psalmist also goes on to say that God’s law/will is written in his heart.

In John 17:21 Jesus asks God to make His disciples one with Him as He is one with God. Paul explains the process of becoming one with God in 2Cor.3:17-18. The process consists of us getting alone with God and allowing His Holy Spirit to change our will into the will of God. Jesus tells us in John 15:7 that if our will is changed into God’s will what we ask for in prayer will be God’s will and God will give us what we are asking for.

Having our will transformed into the will of God is what Paul is explaining to us in Gal.2:20 when he says “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me”.

It is the role of His Holy Spirit to supernaturally change our will into God’s will when we meet with God (Rom.8:26-27). Our will is constantly being influenced, either by the world or by His Holy Spirit (Eph.5:17-18, Rom.12:2). In vs.17 the word “understanding” is translated from the Greek word “suniēmi” which means to recognize, to come to a conclusion after putting something together. It is His Holy Spirit’s job to to present God’s will to us in a way we can understand it.

God has a plan for each of us and His Holy Spirit will reveal that plan to us if we will only meet Him face to face and allow Him to.

1-5-2020 “COME AND SEEK!” Matthew 16:13-17

Bro. Leo is out of town this week, so I thought this would be a good time to look back 10 months at the first study of this series and refresh our memories of what we’ve been studying all year.

This week Bro. Leo starts us on a new study series that will guide us and lead us on an individual spiritual journey of discovery.  This series will provoke us to critically think about the teachings in the Bible and how our beliefs compare to those teachings.

In Matt.16:13-17 Jesus ask two questions, 1) who do men(people) say He is, 2) who do you say He is.  Most of the time we are introduced to Jesus and the Bible by friends, family or a religion that we are brought up in.  And our tendency is to believe what we are told, which is good if what we’re being told is the Biblical truth but not good if what we’re being told is in error.  In Vs. 17 Jesus explains that our acknowledgement of who He is must come from God, not man, “flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”.  It is God who initiates our seeking of who Jesus is, always (John 6:43-44).  It is His Holy Spirit that will teach/reveal to us individually  who Jesus is (John 16:7-9, 13-14).

Our acknowledgement of who Jesus is directly effects our salvation (Matt.16:16, Matt. 10:32-33, Rom.10:9-10, 13).  A personal/individual acknowledgment as a result of a personal divine revelation that results in a personal belief  and commitment that results in a personal outward public confession (Matt. 16:13-17).

We need to ask ourselves if what we believe revealed to us by God or is our beliefs what other people told us to believe (John 18:33-34).

The question we need to be asking ourselves is the question Jesus ask in John 1:38, what are we seeking?  To be seeking we have to recognize a need, an emptiness, something missing, we have to have a perceived need to find something.  If we’re being told by friends, family and religion that we’re fine even if we’re not, we will not seek Jesus.

Ecc. 1:12-14 explains that every one us is given a sense to seek the purpose of life.  Jer. 29:12-14 tells us that God will reveal Himself to us if we truthfully seek Him.

10-18-2020 “THY WILL BE DONE!” Luke 11:2

Luke 11:1-2

Last week we studied the two aspects of the phrase “THY KINGDOM COME”, 1) the Millennial Reign, 2) Christ reining in our daily lives. This week we study the phrase “Thy Will Be Done”.

When we pray for God’s will to be done, we are praying for His will to be 1) perfectly, 2) completely and 3) willingly, carried out through us. There are two ways to achieve the will of God in our lives, 1) we submit or surrender to God’s will (Rom.7:14-15, 19, 21-23, Gal. 5:17,), 2) we conform to God’s will (Psa.40:8, 2Cor.9:6-7).

In Psa.40:8 the word “delight” is translated from the Hebrew word “châphêts” which means to find pleasure in doing, to have affection for and desire to do, strong attraction for doing and an involvement in doing. The contrast can be found in 2Cor.9:7 in the word “grudgingly” which is translated from the Greek word “lupē” which means cause of grief, sorrow, distress or anxiety. And the word “necessity” which is translated from the Greek word ” anagkē” which means compelled to do things out of obligation or force.

In order to carry out God’s will 1) perfectly, 2) completely and 3) willingly, we must have our will conformed to God’s will or we will be acting out of obligation or force (John 17:21-23, Rom.12:2).

The way we get our will conformed to God’s will is by spending time with Him face to face and talking to Him as a friend (2Cor.3:18, Exo.33:11). Our part is to get alone with God and talk to Him as a friend. God’s part is to reflect His glory through us.

Christianity is not about forced regulations and rules/regulations or going to Church on Sunday. Christianity is about being 1) perfectly, 2) completely and 3) willingly conformed to the will of God (Col.4:12).

10-11-2020 “THY KINGDOM COME!” Luke 11:2

Luke 11:1-2

This week Bro. Leo continues us on our study of the prayer life of Jesus by looking at the phrase “Thy kingdom come”.

The first aspect of the Kingdom of God is the physical rein on Earth. In Luke 11:2 the word “Kingdom” is translated from the Greek word “basileia” which means royal dominion or rule, Authority to rein over or rule over. So, when we pray for the “Kingdom of God” we are making a personal commitment to serve God.

During the time Jesus walked the Earth the Jewish folks were looking for and expecting the Kingdom of God to be an physical Earthly kingdom ruled by the Jewish Messiah justly and perfectly (Matt.3:1-3, Luke 1:67-69, 71, 74-75, Zec.14:1-7, (9), 11-12, 16017, Acts 1:6, 104, 7, 9-12).

The Jewish folks didn’t understand at that time that Jesus was there at that time to make the sacrifice for our sins (spiritual aspect of the Kingdom- Acts 1:5). It is the return of Jesus (7 years after the rapture of the Church) to Earth that will start the Kingdom of God on Earth (Acts 1:9-12, Rev. 20:1-4, 7, Rev.5:9-10).

The second aspect of the Kingdom of God is the spiritual aspect. In Luke 17:21 the word “within” is translated from the Greek word “entos” which means inside, within. The spiritual aspect of the Kingdom of God came to Earth when Jesus came to earth. Jesus came to Earth to sow the spiritual seeds of the Kingdom of God (Matt.13:31-33, Matt.6:33-34).

When we pray for the Kingdom of God, we are committing ourselves to His authority and His rule and rein in our lives as King of our hearts before He comes back to rein the world (2Cor.10:5, Rev.22:16-17, 19-20).

10-4-2020 “HONOR BE TO YOUR NAME!” Luke 11:2

Luke 11:1-2

This week Bro. Leo continues us on our study of the prayer life of Jesus by looking at the phrase “Hallowed be thy name”.

The word “hallowed” in Luke 11:2 is translated from the Greek word “hagios” which means to hallow, sanctify, to be holy or set apart, consecrated for divine use.

When we make the statement “Hallowed be thy name” we are making a statement to honor and reverence God for who He is, a recognition of His glory and majesty.

The name of God represents all the divine attributes of God (Isa.6:1-3). When we start our prayer with His name with honor and respect, we are acknowledging that He is worthy of our reverence, respect and devotion.

The opposite of honoring His name is to take His name in vain (Exo.20:7). Of all the 10 commandments, the third commandment is the only one that God says He “will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain”. Taking the Lord’s name in vain alters our mindset in a negative way, just as honoring His name alters our mindset in a positive way (Matt.12:36-37).

When we are not honoring the name of God, our mindset can be altered in such a way that we elevate ourselves (Rom.1:21,25).

9-27-2020 “WHO ART IN HEAVEN!” Luke 11:1-2

This week Bro. Leo continues us on our study of the prayer life of Jesus.

In His model prayer, Jesus uses the phrase “who art in Heaven” to draw our attention to the location in which God resides.  This allows our focus to change from the earthly horizontal to the heavenly vertical (Col.3:1-2).

In Phil.3:20 the word “conversation” is translated from the Greek word “politein” which means to behave or act as a free citizen in a community, a manner of life, thought or conduct in a society.   At the moment of our salvation God changes our citizenship from earth to Heaven (Eph.2:4-6).

When we pray we are invoking Heavens gifts, power and influence down to us (James 1:17).  Prayer is an other worldly endeavor.  We are imposing the divinity of God into an earthly situation, it’s a supernatural activity (Matt.7:7, Mal.3:10).

Prayer immerses us into the Godhead.  Jesus intercedes our prayer (Heb.8:1, Heb.7:24-25).  His Holy Spirit guides our thoughts and direct our prayers (Rom.8:26-27).  Father God in Heaven (Luke 11:2).

Jesus started His ministry with prayer (Luke 3:21).

9-20-2020 “OUR ABBA FATHER!” Galatians 4:6

This week Bro. Leo continues us on our study of the prayer life of Jesus.

In Luke 11:2 Jesus teaches us to start our prayers with “Our Father”.  The phrase “Our Father” gives us the correct mindset to start our conversation with God.  Mentally we are seeing ourselves as children and seeing God as our Father.  Our mindset will be one of a child conversing with a loving Father who desires to give and bless His children with more good things.

As parents, we can understand how God the Father wants to give to and bless us His children, because that’s how we feel about our own children.  Jesus tells us in Matt.7:11 that our Father God loves us even more than we love our own children and He wants to give to and bless us with even more than we want to give to and bless our children.  Jesus also tells us in Matt.6:8 that our Father knows what we need before we even ask Him.

Our Father God knows and cares about every aspect of our life and desires to be involved in every area of our life (Matt.10:29-31).  He is a personal, caring God who desires to be close to us.

In Mark 14:36 Jesus starts His prayer with the Aramaic word “Abba” which means papa,  daddy, it denotes tenderness, compassion, mercy, forgiveness and acceptiveness.  Paul teaches us in Rom.8:9-11, 15-16 that our “Abba Father” relationship with God starts at the point of our salvation when we receive the Holy Spirit.  It is the Holy Spirit living in us that convicts us to cry out “Abba Father” (Gal.4:6,  Mark 14:36).

Jesus teaches us in Mark 10:13-16 that we must approach God as little children to their Father in order to enter in.  It is this “little child to the Father” mindset that allows the Holy Spirit to work in us and teach us God’s will for us in the circumstances we are praying about.
