6-20-2021 “BELIEVE IN ME!” John 14:1-3

This week Bro. Leo starts us on a study of Jesus’ words “believe in me”.

In John 14:1-3 Jesus is trying to comfort the Disciples because He had just told them that He will be crucified the next day (John 13:21, 38, 36). The disciples were still confused about exactly who Jesus was (John 14:8-9). When Jesus tells them to “believe” in Him, He is referring to the second part of the definition of “pisteuō”(believe) which is trusting in, put confidence in, to rely on, attaching oneself to, giving over to another. In Psa.37:3, Psa.4:5 the word “trust” is translated from the Hebrew word “bâṭach” which means to trust in, put confidence in, to rely on, attaching oneself to, giving over to another.

6-13-2021 “FOLLOW ME” part2 John 1:43

This week Bro. Leo continues us in a study of what “saving faith” produces in our lives, “follow me, part2”.

In part1 we learned when Jesus says “follow me” in the New Testament (17 times), He giving us both an invitation and a command. When we “follow Jesus” we make God’s will for our life our priority instead of our own, we can see the contrast in these examples, Matt.4:18-20, Luke 9:27-29, Mark 10:17, 21, Luke 9:57-62. When we “follow” Jesus, we seek His will in every area of our lives before we make our decisions.

When we (our priority is to) “follow” Jesus He will make us into what He has planned for us (Matt.4:19, Psa.32:8-9, Psa.48:14, Isa.58:11) and He will bless our obedience.

It is critical that we know the difference between Jesus’ voice and the voice of a stranger (John 10:3-5). In vs.5 the word “stranger” is translated from the Greek word “allotrios” which means that which belongs to another. Jesus explains the importance of seeking His will with the example of several different herds of sheep in a sheepfold (large pen where Shepard’s would bring their sheep at night for safety) and each individual herd would only respond to their Shepard’s voice, because they recognize his voice and trust him to keep them safe and their needs provided (John 10:1-5). Examples of a strangers voice that we might hear is our own voice (self will), the will of our culture, the in crowd. One way to know if we are listening to Jesus is if our actions are glorifying God (John 16:13-14).
