6-28-2020 “THE SALT AND THE LIGHT!” part1 Matthew 5:13-16
This week Bro. Leo starts us on a study of how Christians should be acting in the midst of all the chaos that is ramping up in our culture.
In Matt.5:13 Jesus calls His Disciples “salt of the earth”. We must understand what salt does in order to understand why Jesus calls His Disciples salt. Salt can add flavor to food, but more importantly Salt preserves food.
The word “Earth” in vs.13 is translated from the Greek word “ghay” which means habitants of Earth. Jesus is telling us that we are the preserver of our surrounding society. As Christians (Disciples of Christ) we are to have an impact on our society. Salt must be applied to food to be effective, likewise Christians must apply our beliefs to society in the way we speak and act. This means that when we see and hear things that are wrong (against God’s word) we must speak up and act, not cower in silence or worse yet agree with the wrongs.
Jesus tells us in vs.16 that our actions should glorify God. So, our purpose of preserving our society is to further glorify God. The word “world”, in vs.14, is translated from the Greek word “kosmos” which means the order of things within a culture.
Most folks, after reading vs.13-16 would think that we are preserving our society from evil and that is certainly true, but we are also preserving our society from the Antichrist and the judgement of God (Rev.2:12-13, 2Thess.2:7-8). God has never and will never rain down His judgement on His children (Gen.6:5, 8-9, Gen.18:20-26, 28-32, Gen 19:1, 22-24).
The Godly individuals are always removed before God rains down His judgement on a society. Notice in 2Thess.2:7-9 that God is restraining Himself from raining down judgement “until he be taken out of the way”, “he” is the Holy Spirit which indwells every believer (John 16:7-8, 13-14). God will not rain down His judgement on society until after He raptures us out of here (1Thess.4:16-18).
This study reminded me of one of my favorite Dietrich Bonhoeffer quotes. “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
Scriptures used in today’s study:
Mat 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Rev 2:12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
Rev 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Joh 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
6-21-2020 “THE 2 TALENTS OR THE 1!” Matthew 25:14-15
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of the principles found in the parable of talents.
This week we look at the principle of personal responsibility for what we do with what God has given us in this life. Bro. Leo uses Joni Eareckson Tada, Tim Scott US Senator Serving South Carolina and Darius Rucker (Tim and Darius grew up in the same neighborhood and about the same time as Bro. Leo) as examples.
I’m not going to try to write a synopsis of this study due to all the details of the three examples, I will list the Scriptures used and simply ask you to listen to this audio file.

6-14-2020 “WHAT HAS GOD GIVEN YOU….IN THIS LIFE?” part2 Matthew 25:14-19
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there (inspired by the book “The Jesus I never knew”).
This week we continue our study of what God wants us to be doing with our time here on Earth. Last week we learned that every Christian will be judged according to what we have done with everything God has blessed us with, we will give a personal account of what we did with all the blessing God bestowed upon us (Matt.25:18-27).
In order for us to be able to use our blessings to glorify God we must first realize those blessings and who bestowed them on us (James 1:17), God is the source of all blessings and we are the receivers. This is the only mindset that will allow and encourage us to glorify God with those blessings. Mal.3:10 tells us that God will bless us abundantly when we turn our blessings back to Him. This mindset reminds us that God has a plan for our life (Psa.16:5-11).
Luke 12:41-44, 48 reaffirms that we will be held personally responsible for our stewardship of God’s blessings to us.
We learn two principles in Matt.25:18, 1) we all have a unique level of ability and God knows what to bless us with and how much to bless us, 2) we are to commit our blessings to God and to glorify God with them and then He will multiply those blessings.
We must maintain a willing mindset to commit our blessings to the glory of God in order to actually perform the act (2Cor.8:10-12).

6-7-2020 “WHAT HAS GOD GIVEN YOU….IN THIS LIFE?” part1 Matthew 25:14-18
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there (inspired by the book “The Jesus I never knew”).
Last week we studied God’s purpose for us realizing the shortness of our lifespan, this week we study what God wants us to be doing with our time here on Earth.
Direct quote from Bro. Leo “I am not taking this parable out of context, but I am not teaching it at this time within it’s context with the depth and teaching points that it deserves. So, I’m going to give you a general understanding of this parable in it’s context and then I’m going to teach the general principles that apply to our 70, 80 or 90 years here on Earth.”
Matt.25:18-27 (parable of the Talents) teaches us that every Christian will be judged according to what we have done with everything God has blessed us with. In this study Bro. Leo gives a Biblical explanation of the two judgements, one judgement for saved folks (1Cor.3:11-16) and one judgement for lost folks (Rev.20:11-15, Matt.7:21-23), so lease listen to the audio recording for all the details and Greek definitions.
In Matt. 23 and 24 Jesus is offering the Kingdom of God to the nation of Israel, saying Temple worship and the Mosaic Law is coming to an end, there going to be a new covenant, and the Children of Israel will reject Him and Jerusalem is going to pay the price and the Temple is going to be destroyed. This is the Jewish Messiah teaching the Jewish Disciples and the nation of Israel things concerning the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is when Jesus will rule the world from Jerusalem and every nation and every knee is going bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s (Thousand year rein).
This is the context of Matt. 24 and 25. Every parable in these two chapters answer the question in Matt. 24:3. Jesus explains in Matt. 25:31-32, 44-46 that this judgement will occur here on Earth at the end of the 7 years of tribulation.
The general principles we can apply to our life (Matt.25:14-15), 1) general investment that Jesus made unto us, He created us, He has given His life for us. 2) we are to take what the Lord has given us in this life and dedicate it to Him and make the most out of it for Him and His Kingdom (Matt.25:21).
In John 6:9 the Disciples attitude towards the five barley loaves, and two small fishes is sometimes our attitudes towards what God has blessed us with instead of thanking God for the blessings and allowing Him to multiply those blessings (John 6:11). God expects us to use all our blessings (out of commitment to Him, not out of obligation) for His glory (Luke 21:1-4).
