4-26-2020 “JESUS AND THE SABBATH!” part4 Matthew 12:1-8

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there. This is the 12th study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

In the parts 1-3 of this series we have learned the differences between the intentions of the Sabbath Laws and the Mishnah oral laws (1521 addendum’s added to the Mosaic Law) that the Jewish religious leaders had developed.  This week we will see how the Mishnah oral laws actually have it backwards (condemning the guiltless, Matt.12:7).

In Matt.12:5 Jesus asks the Pharisees if the labor of the Priest in the Temple on the Sabbath Day cross the line, if not why are they not considered guilty.  Num.28:9-10 tells us that the Priests were to do an extra sacrifice on the Sabbath, this would require the Priests to do labor that were forbidden.  So, the Priests are not breaking the Law because they are commanded to do the labor by God.  The Lord’s work, done by the servant in the Lord’s house commanded by the Lord Himself.  It would be disobedient for the Priest to not do those laborious tasks.

In Matt.12:6 Jesus is telling them that He is a higher servant of God than they were. He is telling them that His ministry and His Disciples have a higher purpose than they have (1Tim.1:15, Luke 19:9-10). Jesus is transitioning them from the Law, Temple, Priest to Himself.

In John 2:13-16 Jesus runs the money changers out of the Temple.  The religious leaders had corrupted the Temple with their Misnah oral laws while they were accusing Jesus of profaning the Sabbath, they calling good evil and evil good (Isa.5:20-21).  In vs.18-22 Jesus tells them He is the Temple, His body standing in front of them was the purest and Holiest Temple of God that was ever on earth (Col.2:9).

Because of their attention to and desires of religious rites and rituals, they could not see who was standing right in front of them, Jesus the Son of God!

4-19-2020 “A TIME TO SEEK ; A TIME TO LEARN!” Ecclesiastics 3:1-11

This week Bro. Leo leads us on a study on the times we’re living in right now and what we should be doing with all our time now.

Ecc. 3:1-11 lists all the events of life and how they should affect us.

In vs.10 the word “exercised” is translated from the Hebrew word “‛ânâh” which means to chasten self, deal hardly with, defile, exercise, force, gentleness, humble (self).  In all these events we should be humbled.

In vs.11 it tells us that God has a purpose for these events even if we don’t understand or can’t see the purpose.  The word “world” is translated from the Hebrew word “‛ôlâm ‛ôlâm” which means a concept of time, a concept of the continuity of time going into eternity. We all have been given the concept of time, we can all look back at the events in our past and we can look ahead and plan for events in our future including our eternity.

What is God’s purpose of the current Coronavirus pandemic?

God has stopped the whole world just for you/me.  Christianity is all about an individual relationship between you/me and Jesus.  In Psa.119:71 the word “affliction” is translated from The Hebrew word “‛ânâh” which means a hardship or affliction imposed for the purpose of resulting in humility.  To be humble is to be teachable.  In the context of the current pandemic vs.71 is telling us that God wants to teach us something from this.

Psa.119:17-18, 67 tells us this current pandemic can bring us back to the right path, the path God wants us on.

Three things we can learn during this pandemic;
1) Learn to seek God with all our heart, Psa.119:10
2) Learn to meditate on God’s word, Psa.119:15.  The word “meditate” is translated from the Hebrew word “śı̂yach” which means to ponder on, to roll over and over in ones mind, ti utter to oneself.
3) Learn to come back to God and His word, get reacquainted with the Word of God and feed on the Word of God, Psa.119:11-2, 16, 1John 2:27.

In Psa.46:10 the word “still” is translated from the Hebrew word “râphâh” which means a letting go of, a relaxing of the mind/spirit.  In order to let go of, something must be wound tight, stretched tense, high strung (1Pet.5:6-7, 1Cor.14:33, John 14:27).

Psa.46:1-11 says that only God can give us peace by giving us a calm and trustful state of mind in which we experience His divine peace and presence.  Our entire dependence should be on His divine power.  When our entire dependence is on God and His divine power we able to stand still and fear not (Exo.14:13-14). Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Pro 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Pro 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Pro 3:8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
Pro 3:9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Pro 3:10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

4-12-2020 “JESUS AND THE RESURRECTION!” Matthew 28:1-7

This week Bro. Leo leads us on a study of what the Resurrection of Jesus Christ tells about Himself and the significance of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ to a Christian.

Last weeks study revealed that we all, individually, have to look at the Cross and see our sin, our judgement and see the wrath of God poured out on Jesus for our sin and believe that He carried our sin there and faced our judgement.  This week we learn that we must also look at the Resurrection and believe the supernatural divine power of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (Matt.28:6).

Rom.1:1-4 tells us that Jesus was declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection of His body.  Jesus possessed the supernatural power of God within Him and all born again believers possess that same power thru the Holy Spirit that indwells us (Acts 1:1-3(4-5)).

The Resurrection proves that everything Jesus said and promised is true (Matt.28:6, John 10:15-18, John 2:19-22).  Notice that the Disciples didn’t believed what Jesus said until they seen it.  They didn’t have the gift of the Holy Spirit yet, we do have the gift of the Holy Spirit indwelling us that allows us to believe without seeing.

What does the Resurrection of Jesus Christ tell us about Himself?

In John 11:25-26 Jesus tells Martha that He is “I am the resurrection, and the life”.  The phrase “I am” is used by Jesus 216 times in the New Testament.  Jesus is saying that He is God when He says “I am” (Exo.3:14).  When Jesus tells us “I AM” He is telling us that He is the source of everything we need (Col.3:11, John 10:10, John 14:1-3).

The Resurrection of Jesus tells us that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay the price of our sin and was accepted by God (1Cor.15:12-19).  The Resurrection of Jesus also tells us that He will resurrect our bodies into glorified bodies (1Cor.15:19-20, Phil.3:20-21, Rom.8:9-11).

As a result of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ we can say 1Co 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
1Co 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
1Co 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
1Co 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

In 1Pet.3:15 Peter exhorts us to be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks us what our hope is.  The reason for the hope that is in us is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, because it validates all the promises made by Jesus.

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there. This is the eleventh study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

Last week we studied the Sabbath and the actions (7 miracles) Jesus did during the Sabbath. Last weeks study was the foundation for this weeks study of all the “oral laws/Mishnah” (1521 addendum’s added to the Mosaic Law) the Jewish religious leaders have added to the Sabbath.

In Matt.12:1-4 Jesus gives us two examples of how the Jewish leaders have distorted the Mosaic Law with their Mishnah, 1) David and his men eating the show bread, 2) labor of the Priest.  Jesus also makes two statements about Himself, 1) He is greater than the Temple, 2) He is Lord of the Sabbath.

In Matt.12:3 notice that Jesus asks them “Have ye not read”, Jesus was showing them the difference between the “written” Mosaic Law and the “oral” Mishnah Law that they were trying to enforce.  As we study the discussions between Jesus and the Jewish leaders we will notice Jesus saying “Have ye not read” several times.

1Sam.21:1-6 gives us the account of David and his men eating the show bread.  The 12 loaves of show bread represented the 12 tribes of Israel that were placed on the table of the Holy of Holies/represented the presence of God.   This represented God as being their sustainer, He is the source of all nourishment for Israel (Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.).   The Priest gave David and his men the show bread in order to nourish them.

In Luke 14:1-6 and Luke 13:10-16 Jesus presents to the Pharisees the difference between the “written” law and “oral” law with the example of performing a healing miracle on the Sabbath.   Jesus was comparing the intent of the Law to their interpretation/oral law of the Law.  The Pharisees missed the intent of the Law (Lev.19:17-18, Hos.6:6-7).

Jesus explains to them that their interpretation of the letter of the Law is not what God wants us to do, He explains to them that the intent of the Law is where their hearts should be (Matt.7:21-23,  Matt.15:7-9,  Matt.22:35-40).

1Sa 21:6 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

4-5-2020 “JESUS AND THE CROSS!” Matthew 27:33-46

This week Bro. Leo leads us on a study of the events of the crucifixion of Jesus.

Everyone has to look at the Cross and answer three questions: 1) who is there?  2) what do you see there?  3) what is happening there?  (Matt.27:33-46)

1Pet.2:21-22 tells us the answer to question 1 is Jesus Christ the sinless Son of God.

1Pet.2:24 tells us the answer to question 2 is my sins on Jesus Christ.

The Crucifixion of Jesus is about me/you personally and the Son of God.   All humanity has to stand alone in two places, 1) at the Cross, 2) at the Judgement Seat of Jesus Christ.  The decision we make at the Cross will eternally impact our welcome or rejection at the Judgement seat.

In 1Pet.2:24 the word “bare” is translated from the Greek word “anapherō” which means to carry or take upon oneself.  By doing so, Jesus took our stripes/punishments upon Himself (Isa.53:4-6, Heb.9:26-27).

When we look at the Cross and accept that Jesus sacrificed Himself for us and we are convicted to commit our lives to Him (saving faith) our salvation is secure (Heb.9:26-27, Heb.7:26-27, Heb.10:10,12).

Matt.27:45-46 tells us the answer to question 3, the sun testified by mourning to the Crucifixion of Jesus (Amos 8:9-10, Zec.12:9-10), the Son testified that God looked away because sin was being placed upon God Himself (Hab.1:12-13, Matt.27:46, 1John 1:5, 2Cor.5:21, Col.2:9).

The Cross is the means by which the righteousness of God is imputed to us (2Cor.5:21).
