8-30-2020 “CALLING UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD!” Genesis 4:25-26

Luke 11:1-2

For the last couple weeks Bro. Leo has been leading us on a study of what Jesus taught us about prayer.  This week Bro. Leo leads us on a study of the Biblical origins of prayer.

The phrase “call upon the name of the LORD” is first written in Gen.4:26 when Adam’s son Seth had a son named E’nos. This was 235 years after creation (Gen.5:3-11).  This is the third description of how man approached God.  First approach was when Adam and Eve would walk with God in the cool of the evening, before they sinned.  The second approach was a sacrificial/alter approach (Gen.4:3-5).

The phrase “call upon” in Gen.4:26 is translated from the Hebrew word “qârâ'” which means to call out in need, to implore, to summon, to invoke into a situation.  It’s always addressed to a specific participant.

The name “E’nos” in the Hebrew means mortal, sick, weakened, and frail.  It appears that Seth was “calling upon the name of the Lord” because his son E’nos was not in good health.  E’nos lived to be 905 years old (Gen.5:9-11).

In Gen.13:1-4 we see the second time the phrase “called on the name of the LORD”.

In Psa.116:1-19 we see the phrase “call upon the name of the LORD” being used as a public calling unto the Lord.  For several years now I have been studying the USA founding fathers and what I’ve learned is that our founders repeatedly called for a public calling unto the Lord for specific needs of our nation and history declares our Lord answered those prayers.

Calling upon the name of the Lord is the first step in prayer (Jer.29:11-14).  Every individual who is saved has called upon the name of the Lord(Rom.10:9-13).

Luke 11:1-2

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of what Jesus teaches us about prayer.

Last week we learned “The first principal we see in Luke 11:1 is “praying in a certain place”. In Mathew 6:6 Jesus tells us we should have a “prayer closet”. The word “closet” is translated from the Greek word “tameion” which means any place of privacy. God expects us to have a prayer closet and use it.”

This week we learn two more principals, 2) God expects us to pray a specific to us prayer(Matt.6:5-6), 3) we are to have a specific time of prayer (Luke 11:1, Mark 1:35).

Prayer is a spiritual exercise that strengthens our spirit in the same way physical exercise strengthens our body.  The more we exercise our spirit, through prayer, the stronger our spirit becomes and the easier it is for our spirit to control our flesh (Gal.5:16-19, Phil.3:3).

Prayer transforms us from being flesh driven to spiritual driven just like it transformed Jesus in Matt.26:39-44.

Prayer is a conversation between an individual and God.  We express to God what we are thinking and feeling and God expresses to us His will, which gives us the proper understanding of our situation.

Luke 11:1-2

Some, if not most, Americans have experienced a disruption in their corporal worship services during this pandemic and as result have experienced a disruption in their daily walk with Jesus.  In today’s study Bro. Leo leads us in a Biblical study of the importance of daily prayer.

The first principal we see in Luke 11:1 is “praying in a certain place”.  In Mathew 6:6 Jesus tells us we should have a “prayer closet”.  The word “closet” is translated from the Greek word “tameion” which means any place of privacy.  God expects us to have a prayer closet and use it.

Jesus tells us we need to pray so we won’t fall into temptations in Matt.26:41.  When we pray the Holy Spirit will guide us, when we don’t pray our flesh will guide us, Gal.5:17, 19-23, 16, 25.

God hears all of our prayers and values them so much that He keeps them with Him in Heaven, Rev.5:8.  If God values our prayers that much then so should we.

8-30-2015 “THE AGE OF THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT” Col. 1:25-27

In today’s message Bro. Leo continues our study of what some call the least taught doctrine in the modern Church, The Age Of The Indwelling Holy Spirit.  Rom. 8:9 tells us that every Christian is indwelt with God’s Holy Spirit and if not we are not a Christian.  There are three aspects of God’s Holy Spirit 1) identity 2) personality 3) His role in our personal life.  Today Bro. Leo teaches on the identity of God’s Holy Spirit.  The scriptures identify God’s Holy Spirit as being like the wind and moving water.  His Holy Spirit, like the wind and moving water, always makes His presence known with energy and movement.  His Holy Spirit will make Himself known to others by outflows of energy and movement of Christians.  This is the reason Christians are left in this world after being saved instead of being raptured to heaven immediately.   God’s Holy Spirit uses the life of the Christian to reveal himself to the lost folks, if in fact the Christian will allow Him to.

8-2-2020 “THE PROMISE OF GOD’S REST!” Matthew 11:28

Bro. Leo is out of town this week so we’re going to post a flashback study from a year ago.

There are many aspects of God’s rest.  In Gen. 2:1-3 the word “rested” is translated from the Hebrew word “shâbath” which means to cease from labor, to bring an end to, to set down as when something is finished, brings a sense of completion.

In Exo. 16:21-23 and Exo. 20:8-11 the word rest is translated from the Hebrew word “shabbâthôn” which signifies a holiday the Sabbath.  Now we see that this day of rest is not only for ceasing from labor but it is also a sacred day in which to recognize the Lord in worship and gratitude.

In Rev. 14:12-13 and Matt. 11:28 the word “rest” is translated from the Greek word “anapauō” which means to give rest or a pause to, give rest from anxiety or stress, being refreshed, reinvigorated, re-energized.   God’s rest is a conscience effort of ceasing in the carnal, physical, horizontal and receiving a divine tranquility and reinvigeration.

Matt. 11:28 is a Messianic statement.  In Exo. 33:11-15 Moses tells God he doesn’t want to act alone and God tells him He will go with him and give him rest.  In Matt.11:28 Jesus is saying He is the one who spoke to Moses.

In Isa. 63:10-14 we see that the children of Israel had no rest when they rebelled against God, but when they were in a right relationship with God they found rest.

We need to come to Jesus (relationship) and give Him all our burdens whole heartedly (1Pet.5:6-7).

In Matt. 11:28 the word “weariness” is translated from the Greek word “kopiaō” which means as being in a long argues journey and being worn out.  And the word “heavy laden” is translated from the Greek word “phortizō” which means over burdened, over stressed to the point of breaking.  When we give these burdens to Jesus He will give us “rest” from them.

We can not find God’s rest without faith and confidence in God (Heb. 3:7-12, 17-19, Heb. 4:1-10).  Here God’s rest represents the promise land, salvation and Heaven.

We enter in to salvation through our faith, not our works (Heb. 4:10).

7-26-2020 “YOU HAVE NOT DENIED MY NAME!” Matthew 10:32-33, Revelations 3:8

 

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of how Christians should be acting in the midst of all the chaos that is ramping up in our culture. In the past few weeks we have learned that the “salt” represents our Christian character and the absolute truth’s of the Bible, we are preserving the culture from the Judgement of God.  And that the “light” represents our voice/actions. The word “candle” in Matt.5:15 is translated from the Greek word “luchnos” which means a portable lamp or lantern that was filled with oil. It has to be lit and filled with oil. Christians are a vessel filled with the Holy Spirit and if we remain silent we are of no good to our culture. This is how the American Church is operating for the most part and why our culture is acting the way it is currently.

Today we learn what the Bible tells us will happen if we truly are the “salt and light”.

Jesus tells us in Matt.10:32 that He will confess us to God if we confess Him to our culture. In vs.16-18 Jesus warns us that we will be questioned and rebutted by our culture for our testimony,  in vs.22 we will be hated by our culture.  And in vs.19 He tells us that His Holy Spirit will give us the words we need to speak when that happens.  In vs.29-30 He tells us God cares for us and will take care of us.

In Matt.28:18-20 Jesus gives us what is known as “The Great Commission”.  Notice two points in the commission, Jesus is defining the “salt” and “light”, 1) confessing commitment to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit,  2) promoting and lifting up the teachings of Jesus and the doctrines of the Bible.  Vs.18 gives us the confidence to be the “salt and light”.

Joshua is a Biblical example of being the “salt and light” in the culture in Josh.24:14-15.

Jesus tells us in Rev.3:8 that God has many blessings for those who do not deny Him.

7-19-2020 “BRIGHT AND SHINNING LIGHT!” Matthew 5:14-16

 

This week Bro. In John 5:32-35 we learn what Jesus means when He says we are to “Let your light so shine before men” in Matt.5:16.  In John 5:32-35 Jesus tells us John “was a burning and a shining light”  because John “beareth witness of me” and “he bare witness unto the truth.”  So, the way we let our light shine is by bearing witness of what Jesus has done in our lives and standing for the truth’s of the Bible.  In John 5:31 the word “witness” is translated from the Greek word “martureō”  which means to be a witness, to speak the truth concerning what one has seen, heard or knows to be true.  The word “testimony” in John 5:34 is translated from the Greek word “marturia” which means a declaration by a witness that bares record of a fact(s), speaking with authority of one who knows, speaking with the knowledge, power and authority of one who knows.

In order for a Christian to have the ability to witness and testify they have to know what it is they are witnessing and testifying about, they need to have personal knowledge and an undeniable knowledge of what they believe.  In 2Tim.1:11-12 Paul gives that exact kind of testimony.

In John 1:6-8 the word “light” is translated from the Greek word “phōs” which means a light that can not be kindled or extinguished, sun light, light created by God-man can’t start it and man can’t extinguish it.  In vs.23 tells us we are a voice for God.  As a voice we are to take a stand, a voice unheard is of no good to anyone.

John 3:28, 30-31 tells us our witness and testimony should be about God, not ourselves.  In vs.30 the word “decrease” is translated from the Greek word “elattoō” which means a suppression of self, lessening of self and a decrease of self.

Jesus tells us in Matt.10:32-33 that the confessors will be confessed.

7-12-2020 “UNDER THE FOOT AND UNDER THE BASKET!” Matthew 5:13-16

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of how Christians should be acting in the midst of all the chaos that is ramping up in our culture.

So far in this series we have learned that the as Christians we are to preserver and purify our society/generation by taking a stand for righteousness. “He” in 2Thess.2:7-8 is all the Holy Spirit indwelt Christians and we preserve our society/generation by holding back the judgement of God and the Antichrist.  That the last Israeli society/generation before God allowed their Nation to be taken from them in comparison to our own American society/generation at this time (Isa.59:2, 12-15, Isa.66:5-8). In these Scriptures we see four attributes of the Israelite’s, 1) actions- act of sinning vs.12. The word “sin” is translated from the Hebrew word “hattai” which means a specific act of sin or a general sense of sinfulness. In vs.2 the word “iniquities” is translated from the Hebrew word “awon” which means depraved actions of perversion, to deviate from the natural, to deviate from the righteous. 2) attitudes, in vs.12 the word “transgressions” is translated from the Hebrew word “pesa” which means a willful deviation from God’s moral ordinances, willful deviation from the will of God. In vs.13 the word “revolt” is translated from the Hebrew word “sarah” which means open blatant revolt against God. 3) society/generation approval of sin. In vs.12 the phrase “we know them” means they chose to sin and feel no need to repent and seek God’s forgiveness, they are saying they are right and God is wrong. 4) the righteous gets attacked, their society/generation attacked those who acted righteously vs.15. The word “prey” is translated from the Hebrew word “shâlal” which means viciously attacked and plundered.

This week we study the Biblical description of the folks we see rioting, demonstrating and protesting in the streets of America.

2Tim.3:2-4 describes the folks we see on the news in the streets.  In vs.3 the word “trucebreakers” is translated from the Greek word “aspondos” which means a person with the state of mind that is absolutely irreconcilable,  they seek no terms of compromise, peace or truth.  In vs.4 the word “heady” is translated from the Greek word “propetēs” which means rash and out of control.  In vs.3 the word “incontinent” is translated from the Greek word ” akratēs” which means unable to control ones self.

2Tim.3:5 and Rev.3:15-18 describes the current Church folks and our response to the folks in the streets.  We have allowed ourselves to waterdown the truth’s of the Bible (salt, Matt.5:13) and we are failing to proclaim the truth’s of the Bible (hiding our lights under a basket Matt.5:14-16).

This American society/generation can be described with the same attributes as that Israeli society/generation.  In order for us to be the “salt” we must take a stand for righteousness (Josh.24:14-15), which means we need to let folks know that we stand for God’s morals (acknowledge God is right), support our good Law Enforcement Officers, support our Military personal and acknowledge that we live in the greatest country in the world, our country is so great that even the folks who hate this country refuse to leave it!

6-28-2020 “THE SALT AND THE LIGHT!” part1 Matthew 5:13-16

This week Bro. Leo starts us on a study of how Christians should be acting in the midst of all the chaos that is ramping up in our culture.

In Matt.5:13 Jesus calls His Disciples “salt of the earth”.  We must understand what salt does in order to understand why Jesus calls His Disciples salt.  Salt can add flavor to food, but more importantly Salt preserves food.

The word “Earth” in vs.13 is translated from the Greek word “ghay” which means habitants of Earth.  Jesus is telling us that we are the preserver of our surrounding society.   As Christians (Disciples of Christ) we are to have an impact on our society.  Salt must be applied to food to be effective, likewise Christians must apply our beliefs to society in the way we speak and act.  This means that when we see and hear things that are wrong (against God’s word) we must speak up and act, not cower in silence or worse yet agree with the wrongs.

Jesus tells us in vs.16 that our actions should glorify God.  So, our purpose of preserving our society is to further glorify God.  The word “world”, in vs.14,  is translated from the Greek word “kosmos” which means the order of things within a culture.

Most folks, after reading vs.13-16 would think that we are preserving our society from evil and that is certainly true, but we are also preserving our society from the Antichrist and the judgement of God (Rev.2:12-13,  2Thess.2:7-8).   God has never and will never rain down His judgement on His children (Gen.6:5, 8-9, Gen.18:20-26, 28-32,  Gen 19:1, 22-24).

The Godly individuals are always removed before God rains down His judgement on a society.  Notice in 2Thess.2:7-9 that God is restraining Himself from raining down judgement “until he be taken out of the way”, “he” is the Holy Spirit which indwells every believer (John 16:7-8, 13-14).  God will not rain down His judgement on society until after He raptures us out of here (1Thess.4:16-18).

This study reminded me of one of my favorite Dietrich Bonhoeffer quotes.   “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
