5-26-2019 “IF THE WILL OF GOD BE!” part 2 1Peter 3:16-17
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of God’s purpose of a Christians’ suffering with part 2 of last weeks study.
In honor of all the fallen American service members on this Memorial Day holiday I will put this study in the context of their suffering and ultimate sacrifice for us.
Last week we learned there is a Biblical pattern throughout the Bible that shows us that suffering can always be followed by glory, reward, blessings, exaltation and spiritual growth if we approach suffering and go through it in obedience to God. We learn that sometimes it’s the will of God that we suffer so that He can use that suffering process to grow, purify, refine and solidify our faith. Notice in 1Pet.3:17 “if the will of God be so” and 1Pet.1:6 “if need be”, there are some things that God can only teach us thru our sufferings.
On this Memorial Day weekend, as we take time to reflect on the ultimate sacrifices our fallen soldiers have offered for us, let us as a Christian nation ask God to help us grow spiritually, draw closer to Him and grow in our dependence and obedience to Him so that He can purify, refine and solidify our faith.
We see in Isa.48:9-12 that suffering is a process that God uses to refine us. Suffering helps us learn things of God (Psa. 119:71, 67, 75).
Sometimes our natural reaction to our suffering as well as others sufferings is to reject or ask that the sufferings be removed, but sometimes enduring the sufferings are the only way God can teach us what He needs us to learn (Matt.16:21-23, 2Cor.12:8, 7, 9).
I can not think of a better way to honor all our fallen soldiers than by acknowledging they sacrificed their lives not only for our freedom, but also to draw us closer to God.

This week we learn that sometimes it’s the will of God that we suffer so that He can use that suffering process to grow, purify, refine and solidify our faith. Notice in 1Pet.3:17 “if the will of God be so” and 1Pet.1:6 “if need be”, there are some things that God can only teach us thru our sufferings.
In Rom.5:4 the word “patience” is translated from the Greek word “hupomonē” which means endurance, perseverance, steadfastness, solidity of faith and character. The word “experience” is translated from the Greek word “dokimē” which means approving, trying, testing.
Psa.26 is a reflection of what David had learned from all his sufferings. God uses suffering to grow us spiritually.
God blesses us thru our sufferings. Jesus entered into glory after He suffered and Job was blessed two fold after his suffering (Job 42:10-12).

5-12-2019 “FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUFFERING!” Hebrews 2:9-10
This week Bro. Leo leads us on a study of God’s purpose of a Christians’ suffering.
The first thing we need to consider is the comparison of our sufferings here on earth to the glory we will have in Heaven (Rom.8:18). There is a Biblical pattern throughout the Bible that shows us that suffering can always be followed by glory, reward, blessings, exaltation and spiritual growth if we approach suffering and go through it in obedience to God.
Suffering produces strength, endurance and spiritual growth (Rom.5:3-4).
As in all other circumstances of our lives, we can look at Jesus as our perfect example. In Heb.2:9-10 we see that the suffering that Jesus went through is what made Him perfect and in turn a blessing to all who will believe in Him. Our salvation is found through the sufferings of Jesus.
One of the things God uses to grow us is suffering (Mark 8:31-33). In vs. 31 the word “must” is translated from the Greek word “dei” which means totally necessary, unavoidable, compulsory to achieve something. It is the suffering that has made us what we are today. It is the suffering that allows us to accomplish something in the Lord.
Sometimes we have to suffer in order to be a blessing to someone else (1Peter 3:17-18).

5-5-2019 “WHAT WE HAVE HOPE FOR!” Romans 8:25
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a study of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and what it means to the future of every Christian.
Last week we learned these three points of significance proven as a result of the Resurrection of Jesus, 1) everything Jesus claimed is true ( He is the Son of God, He and the Father are one, etc.), 2) we are justified in believing what He did on the Cross, 3) God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice as sufficient for the cost of our sin debt. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is what makes Christianity different from any other religion in the world. Jesus was raised from the dead, He lives today in each Christian via the indwelling of His Holy Spirit in every believer. We as Christians can and do experience the presence of God with us here on earth through a personal relationship with Him.
This week we learn that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ was a physical bodily resurrection (Luke 24:36-43).
All believers will be physically resurrected (1Cor.15:20-23).
It is Jesus who will physically change our bodies into glorified bodies like He has (Phil.3:20-21).
Only with our glorified bodies will we be able to see and know everything about Jesus (1John 1:5-7, 1John 3:2-3, 1Cor.13:9-12).
We will realize the totality of the perfect love of God (Rom.5:5, 1John 4:16-17).
God’s glory will be revealed in us when we are delivered from the bondage of sin with the redemption of our bodies (Rom.8:18-19, 21, 23-25). In our glorified bodily form all evil results of the “curse” will be removed from us, no more pain, illness, sinful nature (Rev.21:2-4, Rev.22:1-3).
After our bodily resurrection we will not get tired or weak (Isa.40:29-31).
In our glorified bodies we will have the ability to see and walk in the light of God (Rev.21:22-23, Rev. 22:5).
The city of New Jerusalem that we will be living in measures 1500 miles by 1500 miles square and 1500 miles high with a 75 yard tall wall around it, lighted by the glory of God”s beauty (Rev.21:10-12, 14-18).
The historical fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the future fact of every believer in Christ!

4-21-2019 “MORE THAN AN EMPTY TOMB!” Matthew 28:5-7
(We are asking for prayers for Bro. Leo’s wife Patty. She fell down some stairs this morning. At the time of this study we do not know the extent of her injuries, she is in the ER at this time. Patty told Bro. Leo to go to Church and lead this study and Baptize the people who were scheduled to be Baptized today instead of going to the ER with her, I praise Jesus for her loving and sacrificial spirit.)
This week Bro. Leo starts us on a study of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and what it means to a Christian. Over the next few weeks Bro. Leo will leading us into a very deep study of the Resurrection and what it means to the Christian, we hope that you will follow along.
For the last several weeks we have been studying the Cross. The Cross is and was the plan of God even before creation (Acts 2:22-23). The Cross did not happen by chance or because of an angry mob that got out of hand and went too far. The Cross is the power of God (1Cor.2:6-7, 1 Cor.1:18, 1Cor.1:24). The power to save humanity is of God and not of man (2Cor.4:5-7). There is nothing we can do (good works, Gal.2:16) to save ourselves, only the power of God can save.
For the next several weeks we will be studying the Resurrection and all it means for us. The first thing we learn about the resurrection is that Jesus was raised from the dead (Matt.28:5-7). Next we learn that Jesus is raised from the dead with a flesh and bone body (John 20:19-20). Then we learn that Jesus walked the earth and several people saw and heard Him speak for 40 days (Acts 1:1-3).
In Rom.8:9-11 we learn that the Trinity is the Resurrection Spirit of Jesus Christ. We also learn that if we have the Spirit that raised Jesus in us we will also be raised from the dead.
In 1Cor.15:3-5 we find the “Pauline Creed” which is the definition of Christianity. 1) Jesus died on the cross for our sins, 2) He was buried in a tomb, 3) He rose from the dead on the third day, 4) He was seen alive in bodily form for 40 days by several people. A Christian believes without a doubt the first three points and experiences the fourth point through the eyes of faith and the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Christianity is not about a religion, or creeds, ideologies or teachings. The Disciples were Martyrs for the man and Son of God Jesus Christ, not for a religion or ideology. We are Christians because we believe in the Resurrection of Jesus and we have experienced Jesus through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
At the moment of our physical death we will hear one of two statements, 1) ” I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” Matt.7:23, 2) “Well done, good and faithful servant” Matt.25:23.

4-14-2019 “THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS!” 1Corinthians 2:1-5
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Resurrection Sunday study by looking at the message of the Cross.

There are two types of people in the world, 1) those who reject the message of the Cross and 2) those who receive the message of the Cross.
The type that reject the message of the Cross do so for a couple different reasons. Some reject the Cross because they think they are saved by their “religion” (1Cor.1:23 “unto the Jews a stumblingblock”, Gal.5:2-4, 6). Some reject the Cross because they consider themselves wise and the message of the cross foolish (1Cor.1:23 “unto the Greeks foolishness”, 1Cor.1:22).
The type of people who receive the message of the Cross have come to the realization and understanding that we are ungodly, ruled by sin, can not save ourselves and the Cross is the only door unto Heaven (Rom.5:6, 8, 1Pet.3:18, Heb.9:25-28, Col.2:13-14).

4-7-2019 “THE BLOOD OF HIS CROSS AND THE BODY OF HIS DEATH!” Colossians 1:13-14, 19-22
This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Resurrection Sunday study by taking a look at the Crucifixion as it pertains to the Lord’s Supper.
So far in this series we have learned that the “Crown of Thorns” represents the “Curse” that was put on Creation at the fall of Adam and Eve. The word “cursed” in Gal.3:10 is translated from the Greek word “katara” which means rejection by God, punishment, destruction and condemnation resulting in God’s righteous judgement. Involves both the declared sentence of divine judgement and the punishment inflicted thereof.
In Gen. 3:14 the word “cursed” is translated from the Hebrew word “‘ârar” which means hemmed in or bound up with boundaries/limitations, obstacles, difficulties and burdens.
This week we learn that Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross was the payment He spent to save us from the “katara”/“‘ârar”. In Col.1:14 the word “redemption” is translated from the Greek word “apolutrōsis” which simply means to be bought with a price.
The Lord’s Supper is the second public ordinance to Christians, the first being public baptism. By partaking in the Lord’s Supper we are publicly declaring that we believe what Jesus did for us on the Cross as well as reminding ourselves of Jesus’ sacrifice that saved us from the “katara”/“‘ârar” (1Cor.11:24-25). This ordinance also demonstrates unity within the Church (1Cor.11:18).

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Resurrection Sunday study by taking a closer look at the “Crown of Thorns” doctrine.

When Adam and Eve sinned they were no longer allowed to live in the garden of Eden in the presence of God, they would now endure pain and suffering and eventually die.

In vs.15 the word “bondage” is translated from the Greek word “douleia” which means subjected to or enslaved by, to prevent a person from possessing something. In Gen. 3:22-24 we see that Adam and Eve were no longer allowed to possess eternal life after they sinned.
The “Crown of Thorns” that was placed on Jesus’ head before the crucifixion was placed there so that everyone would understand that Jesus took the Curse upon Himself for every person who would believe in Him and place whole trust in His ability to save them (2Tim.1:9-10).

3-17-2019 “HE WORE MY CROWN!” Matthew 27:27-31
This week Bro. Leo starts us on a Resurrection Sunday study. In today’s study we are introduced to the “Crown of Thorns” doctrine. This study will not only increase our thankfulness for what Jesus did for us on the cross but will also increase our desire and urgency that all the lost folks we know should come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
In Matt. 27:29 we are told that the Roman soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head before they crucified Him. In Genesis 3:14-19 we read that the earth would be “cursed” with thorns and thistles because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. In Gal.3:10, 13 we read that Jesus took the “curse” upon Himself.
The word “cursed” in Gal.3:10 is translated from the Greek word “katara” which means rejection by God, punishment, destruction and condemnation resulting in God’s righteous judgement. Involves both the declared sentence of divine judgement and the punishment inflicted thereof.
So, the “Crown of Thorns” represents the actions of the judgement of God; rejection, condemnation and punishment of every sinner by God.
In Matt.7:21-23 Jesus tells us that only folks who do the will of the Father will enter into Heaven. Notice that Jesus tells us He never knew the folks who are not allowed in Heaven. Jesus tells us in John 6:40 that the “Will of the Father” is to have a personal relationship with the Son.
The bodies of both saved and lost folks will be resurrected and the lost will be rejected from Heaven and sent to Hell (John 5:24-29, Rev.20:11-15).
This weeks study is just an introduction to the “Crown of Thorns” doctrine, next week Bro. Leo will take us much deeper into this doctrine.
