This week Bro. Leo continues our study on following Jesus by looking at God’s purpose for us.

Following Jesus is a depth of commitment, a decision to follow the Lord in every area of our life, a willingness to do everything that Jesus tells us to do.

In Mark 10:17-22 we see a man who was willing to do everything Jesus asked him to do except one thing. Because of his unwillingness to do that one thing, he could not experience all the blessings of following Jesus.

Jesus was very specific in His instructions to the man in Mark 10:17-22 including an action of forsaking and then follow. The man obeyed all the commandments except one, he placed his wealth above God (Exo. 20:3).

God will make us into what He wants us to be if we are willing to leave our nets (leave anything that we value more than Him) Matt. 4:18-22.  In 2Tim.1:9 we see two points, 1) God saves us,  2) God will reveal His purpose for us (Phil.2:12-13).  It is our responsibility to accept God’s purpose for us and reject what we want our purpose to be (leave our nets).

We are to continually seek God’s will for us which will increase our knowledge of God and allow us to please Him in everything we do (Col.1:9-10).

We all have a common purpose which is to make a difference in the lives of those around us (Mark 9:41).

There are things in our lives that Jesus needs us to remove so that He can replace them with the blessings He wants to give to us.  Does God have the right to ask us to forsake some things in our lives?

He died for me = I live for Him

He died for me > Anything I can do for Him

This week Bro. Leo continues our study on following Jesus, specifically the word “follow”.

In John 10 Jesus tells that we should hear His voice, know His voice and follow His voice. In verse 27 the words “follow me” are translated from the Greek word “akoloutheo” which means 1) to accompany and go with in a subservient, obedient and following manner. 2) abiding fellowship and following, implies constancy, longevity and consistency.

We’ve been studying the Biblical fact that God gives us specific guidance and direction.  This study will reveal how we obtain God’s specific guidance and direction for us.

In Luke 9:62 Jesus tells us we must have continuous, consistence action in our efforts to “follow” Him.   When the Lord calls us to do something we need to act without hesitation (Matt. 4:18-22, Matt. 9:9).

If there is any reason we might have that we believe keeps us from following God’s specific guidance and direction we are told that God will remove that reason (Matt. 16:24-25,  John 8:12, John 12:26).

This week Bro. Leo starts a transition from our study of the Leadership of God to a study on following Jesus, specifically the word “follow”.

We have been studying King David and how he asked God for specific guidance and God would answer him with a specific answer.  We also studied how Peter was told by the Holy Spirit to go to a specific place (Acts 11:11-12).

In John 10 Jesus tells that we should hear His voice, know His voice and follow His voice.  In verse 27 the words “follow me” are translated from the Greek word “akoloutheo” which means 1) to accompany and go with in a subservient, obedient and following manner.  2) abiding fellowship and following, implies constancy, longevity and consistency.

In Matt. 11:28-30 Jesus tells us to take His yoke.  In order to understand these verses we need to understand that in Jesus’ time they used a tandem yoke to train young oxen.  They would team an older experienced ox with a young inexperienced.  The older ox would lead and do the majority of the work and the young ox would follow and learn from this.

This week Bro. Leo leads us deeper into a study of the Leadership of God.

The scariest words we can utter to ourselves are “”I” think this is the best thing to do”.  When we say that we are relying solely on our own understanding, experience and wisdom instead of relying on God’s all knowing wisdom and guidance (James 1:8, Jer.29:11).

In 1 Sam. 30:6 the words ” encouraged himself” is translated from the Hebrew word “châzaq” which means to attach yourself to, to be bound to which will result in strengthening, to firm in or to be supported by, to cling to.
What David is saying is he is not going to devise a plan on his own, he is going to rely solely on what God tells him to do by using the ephod to get a direct answer from God.  Listen to the recorded study for the definition of the ephod and how it worked, it was an active and living source of God’s direct guidance, wisdom and instruction during the old covenant.

In the new covenant we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us that will give us God’s direct guidance, wisdom and instruction.  Psalms 119:4-8, 11-16, 23-24, 33-35, 40 tells us how we activate the Holy Spirit in our life.  The Word of God working with the Holy Spirit will give us a direct answer and guidance from God.

When we make a decision we should be able to utter these words “the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting” (Acts 11:12).

After spending the last few weeks studying the Biblical principles of purifying our hearts, this week Bro. Leo leads us on a study of the Leadership of God.

We are given examples in the Bible of what both God’s leadership looks like and doesn’t look like.

In 1Sam. 27:1-4 we see David reacting to the situation of King Saul wanting to kill him by deciding what is best for him and how he should act based upon himself with no input from God “there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines…….so shall I escape out of his hand”.  This happened when David was in his 20’s quite a few years after he fought and killed Goliath.  So David had went from depending on God to give him victory to depending on himself fro his needs.

In 1 Sam.23:1-5 David is back to relying on God to tell him what he should do “David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines?”.  And again in 1 Sam. 30:1-12 “but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.  And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them?”.

If we are honest with ourselves we can see that we are just like David, we don’t always ask for and follow the Leadership of God.

This week Bro. Leo continues our study of the “be attitudes” with a study on what Paul meant by “let us cleanse ourselves”.

There are three elements of purifying our hearts, 1) confession – audibly telling God He is right and we did wrong, 2) Godly sorrow – being truly distraught about committing the sin, knowing the sin we committed was laid on Jesus at Calvary 3) true repentance – from the Greek word “metanoia” = a change in a persons mind, concerning a certain sin, that results in a change of this sinful action from sinful activity to righteous activity. “metanoia” (repentance) involves our mind and our actions.

Cleansing is an act of God, confessing is an act of ours.  God can not do His part until we do our part.  Confession leads us to Godly sorrow, Godly sorrow leads us to repentance, the power of repentance delivers us from that particular sin and we will not regret not committing that sin again (2Cor.7:10).

There are two areas of sin.  1) sin of the flesh, outward acts of the body  2) sins of the mind and spirit, sinful thoughts, envy, lust, covetousness, etc.  We are to confess “all sin” (2Cor.7:1).

In James 4:5-8 we see a list of what our part of “cleansing” is:
1) confess (submit to God) vs.7
2) resist the devil, recognize when the devil comes against us, vs.7
3) draw nigh to God, seek God

In Psalm 19:11-14 we find the prayer to accomplish James 4:5-8.

If we are not confessing our sin daily, it is because we are comfortable with it to the point of not feeling the need to confess it, but if we confess our sin daily we will start taking notice of even more sin that we are committing because we will be cleansed of the other sin that was blocking our vision.

From last weeks study: To purify our hearts we must confess our individual sins daily, tell God I am guilty of (blank) with Godly sorrow and repentance (Rom.3:19-20, Psa.51:6-7). In this study Bro. Leo uses two Biblical examples of “metanoia” (repentance).

1) David in Psalms 32, 38 and 51 had committed adultery and murder.  The Scriptures give us details of how David felt before, during and after he purified his heart (Psa.38:1-7, 17-18, Psa.51:4, 17, 3, 6).

2) Saul, in Acts 8:1, Acts 7:58-60, Acts 8:3, Acts 22:3-5, 1Cor.15:3-6, 9-10, goes from persecuting and killing Christians to preaching the Gospel.

Confession leads us to Godly sorrow, Godly sorrow leads us to repentance, the power of repentance delivers us from that particular sin and we will not regret not committing that sin again (2Cor.7:10).

In 2Cor.7:10 the word “salvation” is translated from the Greek word “sōtēria” which means rescue or safety (physically or morally): – deliver, health, salvation, save, saving.
In the context of 2Cor.7 the word “deliverance” would be a better translation because Paul is writing to the Corinthians about a particular sin that they were aware was happening within their congregation (a man sleeping with his step Mother).

This week Bro. Leo continues our study of the “be attitudes” with a look at the purity of our heart at the point of our salvation and after.

At the point of our salvation there were three entities working on our hearts, 1) Word of God penetrated our hearts (we willingly cooperated), 2) the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from our sins, 3) the Holy Spirit indwells us (Acts 15:5-10).

In Hebrews 9:14 the word “purge” is translated from the Greek word “kath-ar-os'” which means wash, cleanse, purified or purged, clean, pure and clear.  1Cor. 6:9-11 tells us that we are saved by the power of Jesus and only the power of Jesus.

After the day of our salvation our hearts need to be purged daily.  Jesus tells Peter in John 13:3-10 that Peter didn’t need to be completely washed again (saved again) since he was already saved.  Jesus tells Peter he only needed his feet washed (his daily sins).  Once we are saved we can not loose our salvation, but we still need our daily sins forgiven in order to stay in fellowship with Jesus.

In 1John 1:9 the word “confess” is translated from the Greek word “homologeō” which means to say the same thing, consent or agree with, confess in public.  When we confess we are acknowledging to God that He is perfectly right in His moral statutes.  We are saying what God calls sin is in fact sin.  We are saying God is right and we are wrong.  As we confess God is purifying (kath-ar-os) our hearts.

Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Joh 13:9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
Joh 13:10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

1Jn 1:7 ……. and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1Jn 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
