12-18-2016 ‘WHY BETHLEHEM? WHY SHEPHERDS? Luke 2:8

This week Bro. Leo continues his series on Christmas by looking at a couple details of the birth of Jesus.  Every detail written in the Bible has significance.  This study looks at the significance of Bethlehem, shepherds and the three gifts given by the wise men.

Bethlehem was the one exception of the Levitical Rabinical law concerning raising sheep, only sacrificial lambs could be raised there and only there could they be raised.  Bethlehem is the only place Jesus the Lamb of God could be born.

The Levitical shepherds attended every birth of the sacrificial lambs to see their worthiness for the sacrifice of the temple.  This is why the Levitical shepherds were the first folks to visit Jesus.

In this study Bro. Leo discusses his theory of the birth place of Jesus being in a “migdal edar” tower of the flock.  This theory is taken from the prophecies in Micah 5:2-5, 4:7-9.

The three gifts: Gold represented the kingdom and His right to rule,  frankincense  represented the High Priest-sinless, myrrh represented that Jesus was born to die.

The names: Benoni means so or man of sorrow,  Benjamin means son of the right hand.  From the account of Ratchel giving birth to Benoni/Benjamin in the “migdal edar” (Gen. 35:18).

God is in the details and God is in control!

12-11-2016 :”A RABBI’S VIEW OF CHRISTMAS!” John 3:9-16

This week Bro. Leo continues his series on Christmas by looking at a Rabbi’s (Jesus) view of Christmas.  In this study Bro. Leo uses some quotes from a book called “The Book of Mysteries” by Jonathan Chan to illustrate the Biblical fact that the only path of salvation originates in Christmas.  I do not have a copy of the book in front of me, so I will not attempt any of the quotes.  I will simply say that if religion and or men have told you there are certain steps “you” must take in order to “obtain” your salvation the Rabbi”s (Jesus’) words in the Bible say the opposite.

In John 3:3 Jesus tells Nicodemus the only way a man can see heaven is to be born again.  Then Jesus tells him that no man can ascend up to heaven except the man that came down from heaven (John 3:13).  From these two verses we are given the fact that salvation does not originate on earth it originates in heaven and it can not be obtained (we can not “born” ourselves), salvation is received.  In John 6:47 Jesus tells the only way to receive salvation, which is to put our total trust and commitment in Him.  In verse 47 the word translated “believeth” originates from the Greek word “pistis” which means to place complete reliance upon Christ for salvation.

John 1:11-12 further describes salvation in the Christmas story (salvation originating in heaven and descending to us on earth) by comparing lost folks to saved folks and the reason for both.  The lost folks reject Jesus, the saved folks received Jesus.

In “The Book of Mysteries” by Jonathan Chan the author states that salvation is simply the Emmanuel solution, the Hebrew definition being “God with us”.  Mat 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

12-4-2016 “THE REACTION TO CHRISTMAS!” Luke 2:20, Matt. 2:16

This week Bro. Leo continues his series on Christmas by looking at the two opposing reactions to Christmas found in the Scriptures and the cause of both.

In Luke 2:20 the shepherds glorified and praised God for the good news of Jesus.  In Matt. 2:16 Herod murders all the children that were in Bethlehem  and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under.  Had the wise men came back to him, he probably would have murdered them also.

In Luke 2:10-16 we see the shepherds get a revelation and invitation from God concerning the birth of Jesus.  In Matt. 2:1-4 we see King Herod get the same revelation and invitation.

A revelation and invitation from God demands one of two responses, 1) we receive and respond in a positive manner  2) we reject or ignore in a negative manner.

The shepherds, in Luke 2:15-16, received and responded in a positive manner to God’s revelation and invitation.  In Luke 2:17, 20 we see the results of the shepherds response to God’s revelation and invitation to them, they shared the revelation/invitation and glorified and praised God.

King Herod, in Matt. 2, rejects God’s revelation and invitation and responded in a negative manner causing the deaths of thousands of children.  King Herod, like many folks today, was threatened by the news of Jesus.  Herod was unwilling to allow Jesus to rule over him.

When confronted with Jesus we are confronted with our evil ways and we must make a decision, either we 1)  receive Jesus and commit our lives to him and reject evil, or 2) we reject Jesus and continue in our evil ways (John 3:17-19).

In John 3:15 the word “believeth” is translated from the Greek word “pistis”.  Pistis doesn’t simply mean believing that Jesus exists, it means to commit your salvation to Jesus.  Bro. Leo gives a great explanation of pistis using a chair.  You see a chair setting in a room and you believe it is a chair, but you aren’t “pistis” in the chair until you commit to actually setting in that chair.

When you believe in Jesus to the point of “pistis” you will be spiritually reborn (John 1:10-13).  Spiritual birth is the same as physical birth in the sense that no mother gives birth to a child without knowing the experience happened, likewise if you have been born again spiritually you will know that you have experienced it.  If you have not experienced it then you have not been reborn and should seek revelation and invitation from God (Hab. 2:1).

11-27-2016 “THE ? OF CHRISTMAS!” 1Tim. 1:15

This week Bro. Leo starts a series on Christmas by asking “what is the Biblical central message of Christmas?

1Tim. 1:15 answers that question by saying that Jesus came into the world to save sinners.  Matt. 1:21,  John 1:29,  John 3:17  all give the same reason.  Mark 2:17 explains that Jesus accomplishes this by causing sinners to repent.  But not all sinners will repent because they love sin (John 3:19).

There are two effects of Jesus saving us from sin, 1) He removes the penalty of sin (John 3:16)  2) He removes the authority and power of sin over us (Rom 6:14).

In this study Bro. Leo also discusses why society today refuses to talk about Jesus and why they do their best to demonize folks who do.  I can not write an adequate synopsis of this, you really need to listen to the study and I believe most folks will consider it an eye opener.

11-20-2016 “OFFERING A SACRIFICE OF THANKSGIVING!” Psa. 50:14-15

This week Bro. Leo leads us in a study of Thanksgiving using the Old Testament principals of animal sacrifice to define the New Testament Thankfulness.

In Psalms 50:14 the word translated as “offer” is “zâbach” and means to offer an animal for sacrifice.
In vs.14 the word translated as “thanksgiving” is “tôdâh” and means acknowledgement of gratitude for a specific blessing from God.  Requires 1)time  2) focus  3) specifics.

In Psalms 50:10 God declares Himself owner of all the animals, which includes the ones used for sacrifice.  When those folks offered a sacrifice they were actually just giving back a portion of what God had given to them.

Our world view of sacrifice is the opposite of the Biblical view.  Webster defines sacrifice as the act of giving up something that belongs to us for someone else.  James 1:17 tells us that every blessing we have come from God.  Romans 8:28 tells us that both the good and bad things that happen to us will work to bless us, so we should be thankful in both the good and bad.

The process begins with a prayer of confession/self examination (Psa. 51:1-4, 2Co 13:5).  Then it progresses into asking God to reveal to us sins that we are not aware of in our life (2Cor. 3:18, Psa.51:6, Heb.12:5-7).

The results are 1) renewed and increased joy (Psa 51:8,12), 2) freedom from sin (Psa 32:8,Psa 51:6b, 2Co 3:17), 3) guidance from God (Psa 51:6), 4) God will use you and your confession process to minister to others who have fallen into the same sins that you have (Psa 51:13, Psa 32:11).

11-6-2016 “TO BE FREE INDEED!” 2Cor. 3:17-18 John 8:36

This week Bro. Leo continues our study of faith and prayer with the Biblical procedure for true freedom.

2Cor.3:18 describes God’s two part freedom procedure.  The first part is what we need to do.  “with open face” placing oneself prayerfully and meditatively in stillness before the Lord openly and honestly bearing oneself to the Lord.  Asking the Lord to reveal to us bondage’s, burdens and strongholds in our life that we aren’t aware of.
The second part is God’s part.  “changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”  Our Lord will reveal to us those bondage’s, burdens and strongholds in our life that we aren’t aware of through the power of His Holy Spirit (2Cor.3:17).

God will never force change on us, He desires 1) to narrow our focus upon ourselves 2) to peel back the emotional and mental layers 3) for us to seek change.  We must allow God to penetrate our true feelings, emotions and blind spots by seeking change from Him.

Confession is an intricate part of God’s freedom procedure.  If we are not confessing our sin to God we are lying to ourselves (1John 1:5-10).  As we confess the sins that we are aware of  we also need to be asking God to reveal to us the sins that we are not aware of.  The more we do this the closer to God’s will we will become.

10-30-2016 “CHANGE ME O LORD!” 2Cor. 3:18

This week Bro. Leo continues our study of faith and prayer with the Biblical responsibilities that are our portion of our personal relationship with Jesus and God’s reaction to them.

Prov. 16:2 and 21:2 explain to us why we need to seek God’s perspective of ourselves, we all have spiritual blind spots that only God can see and reveal to us.  The first step in any kind of recovery is identifying the problem, which is why it is so important that we seek God’s perspective of our minds and actions.

King David gives us an example of how to seek God’s perspective of us in this prayer: Psa 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
Psa 139:24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Once we have sought God’s perspective He will reveal to us our wicked ways and through the power of His Holy Spirit we will be transformed into His righteousness, 2Cor.3:18.   As a result we will have freedom from the yoke of sin that has had us under bondage, 2Cor.3:17.

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Get alone with Jesus with an open heart
2) Ask Jesus to reveal areas in our life that need to be changed
3)Confess (agree with Jesus) these areas/sins to Jesus
4)Ask Jesus to change these areas of our life

GOD’S PROMISE TO US:
1)He will get alone with us
2)He will reveal to us areas of sin in our life.
3)Through the power of His Holy Spirit He will change us, freeing us from the bondage.

10-23-2016 “THE WHAT IF’S…..”! James 4:8

This week Bro. Leo continues our study of faith and prayer with the Biblical responsibilities that are our portion of our personal relationship with Jesus, the what if’s.

The what if’s are pro-active, conscious, willful acts that God expects from us.  Of these “what if’s, the most important one is to draw near to God (James 4:8).  The words “draw near” in verse 8 represent presence and space and is defined as to approach.  No other “what if’s” can be accomplished without first “drawing near to God”.  In Mark 1:35 Jesus gives us the perfect example of “drawing near to God.  In verse 35 Jesus, before starting His day, went out to a solitary place to talk with God.

In Mark 4:34 we can see that when we spend time with Jesus He will explain all things to us.  Getting Jesus’ perspective and knowledge of things is very important because we are naturally of the understanding that we know what is right (Prov. 16:2, 21:2, 14:12).  Jesus knows us and our situations much better than we know ourselves and if we approach Him with an open and unveiled spirit He will show us our unrighteousness by revealing to us His righteousness (2Cor. 3:18).

Jesus didn’t die on that cross so that we could go to Church on Sunday.  He died on the cross so that we could have a personal relationship with Him daily and through this daily relationship He could transform us into His righteousness.

10-16-2016 “WHAT SHALL WE DO?” John 6:27-29

This week Bro. Leo continues our study of faith and prayer with a question that is asked several times in the New Testament, What shall we do?

To begin to understand the answer to this question we must realize that ” the work of God” is our faith (John 6:29).  It is through our faith that we will acquire the answer to our question.

Our faith is to be pro-active: seek, knock, ask (Matt. 7:7-8).  Our spiritual life is our own responsibility and requires willful action on our part (Eph. 5:18).
1)Through our faith we seek the answer from God (Acts 9:6, Acts 16:27-31, Acts 2:37-38).
2)Through our faith we approach (knock) God (James 4:8a).
3)Through our faith we ask God (Prov. 3:6).

Jesus gave us the example to follow (Mark 1:35).  In His example to us,  Jesus isolated Himself from all distractions so that His whole concentration was on God and what God had to say to Him.  This is a pro-active, deliberate, willful act.

If we are not seeking, knocking and asking we are not finding, entering in and receiving. Mat 7:8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

The results of a pro-active deliberate willful faith is spirit of understanding, gratitude and joy (Eph. 5:18-20).
