1-31-2021 “MUST BE BORN AGAIN!” John 3:1-7

This week Bro. Leo continues us on our study of “The Jesus you never knew” that we started in January 2020 by looking at the phrase “must be born again”.

Last week we studied the mindset of the Pharisees and learned they considered themselves to be already citizens of Heaven because of their religious lineage and positions of religious leadership, this week we look at a few more examples of that mindset (Matt.3:7-9, John 8:31-33, 38-40). Through these Scriptures we can see how the Jewish Pharisees had, over time, distorted their interpretation of the Scriptures to the point of not even being able to recognize Jesus as who He truly is (John 5:39, 46). Unlike the Pharisees, a fisherman named Philip did rightly understand the Scriptures and recognized Jesus for who He truly is (John 1:45, Deut.18:15, 18). There are many Christian religions in the world today that teach salvation can only come through their religion and that if you are a “member” of said religion you are saved, but Jesus tells us that “Ye must be born again”.

When Jesus told the Pharisees they weren’t saved by their religion it “floored” them (John 3:7). In John 3:7 the word “marvel” is translated from the Greek word “thaumazō” which means all struck, astonished, to be taken back, to be floored.

By Nicodemus’ response in John 3:4, we can tell that he was depending on his own works to earn his salvation. He knew he could not possibly be born of his mother again. Instead of teaching that the purpose of the “Law” was to teach the knowledge of sin, the Pharisees were teaching that the “Law” was the way to salvation (Rom.3:19-20, 28, 30). In other words the Pharisees were teaching a “works” based salvation. That is why Nicodemus could not understand being born again, because it was beyond human power to be born again.

In 2Cor.5:17 the word “new” is translated from the Greek word “kainos” which means to be renewed quantitively, the act of renewing the inner self. Our “works” do not earn us salvation, only being born again saves us (Gal.6:15, Eph.2:1-2,5,9). we are “reborn” through the power of God (Eze.36:26). Much like many Christian religions today, the Pharisees refused to believe the Scriptures (John 3:9-10).
