5-31-2026 “WHAT PENTECOST IS NOT!” Acts 3:19,21

This week David Sisk leads us in a study of the Church at Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. The word Church is translated from the Greek word ekklēsia which means a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): – assembly, church. Therefore the context of the chapter defines which assembly/Church is being described. Pentecost is the fiftieth day from Passover, that is, the festival of “pentecost”. The Jewish celebration of Pentecost is known as Shavuot (Hebrew for “Weeks”), occurring fifty days after Passover on the sixth of Sivan.
It is one of the three biblical Pilgrimage Festivals, originally marking the wheat harvest and the bringing of firstfruits to the Temple in Jerusalem.
In Jewish tradition, Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah and the Ten Commandments to Moses at Mount Sinai.
