JESUS SABBATH

Please listen to these audio study’s. This blog only highlights the study and there is tons of Biblical information on the audio study that the confines of this blog can not express.

This week Bro. Leo continues us on a Biblical study that’s goal is to look at the life of Jesus through a lens of those who were there. This is the eleventh study of the series, the first three studies set the foundation of the series.

Last week we studied the Sabbath and the actions (7 miracles) Jesus did during the Sabbath. Last weeks study was the foundation for this weeks study of all the “oral laws” the Jewish religious leaders have added to the Sabbath.

The Torah is the Written Law of God as revealed to Moses, the first 5 books of the Old Testament, known to the Jewish religion as the written Law.

Mishnah is the oral tradition of interpreting (by the Pharisee’s and Sadducee’s)  the Written Mosaic Law, known to the Jewish religion as the Rabbinical teachings.  Mishnah is where the 1521 addendum’s to the 613 Mosaic Laws comes from.

In Matt.12:1-2 the Pharisees accused the Disciples of breaking the Sabbath by “plucking corn” and “eating” it.

The Torah says they were not to do any work (professional work), gather, carry, bake, boil or roast, plant or harvest (agricultural practices), start a fire, or conduct business on the Sabbath Day. They were to remember God delivered them from the slave bondage of Egypt (Sabbath Day was specific to the Nation of Israel, Luke 4:16-17) (Duet.5:12-15, Eze.20:10-12, Exo.16:21-30, Exo.34:21, Exo.35:2-3) (given by the Prophets, Jer.17:21-23, Neh.13:15).  The Torah allowed them to pluck the grain by hand, for personal consumption, but not cut it with a sickle (harvesting it) (Duet.23:25).

From those written laws the Mishnah added 39 prohibited labors on the Sabbath Day, here’s just a few:  no plowing digging or raking of any kind,  no dragging a chair across the room,  no sowing seeds of any kind, no watering house plants/flowers, no reaping including picking fruit or flowers, no gathering including picking fallen fruit up off the ground, no raking leaves, no squeezing fruit of any kind, no shearing including clipping finger nails, etc.

As you can see the Mishnah distorted the intentions of the Written Law and that’s what Jesus was having to deal with during His 3.5 year Ministry here on Earth (Mark 7:6-7).

For the same reasons we must question every doctrine that our religious leaders are teaching us so we know if it is Biblical or man’s traditions (Mark 7:6-7, Col.2:8).
