1-3-2021 “AND THEY GAVE UNTO HIM!” Matthew 2:9-11

This week Bro. Leo continues on a Christmas series study by taking look at giving to the lord.

Matt.2:11 gives us the account of the Wisemen giving gifts to Jesus, which raises a couple questions for us:
1) What are we giving to Jesus in our daily lives.
2) What is our motivation for doing so.

In Matt.2:11 the word “gifts” is translated from the Greek word “dōron” which means a gift of honor, respect and or reverence for a person of authority or importance.

We can give Jesus our love because He first gave us His love (John 3:16, 1John 4:19).

We can give our gratitude to Jesus because He died to save us (Rom.5:6-8, Matt.20:28).

We can give our servitude to Jesus because He serves us (Psa.116:5-12).

We are given a principle of giving in Mal.3:10, the more we bless others the more we are blessed. James 1:17 tells us that every good gift comes from God.

In Psa.116:12 the word “render” is translated from the Hebrew word “shûb” which means a giving back to. It is a recognition of God as our source of all our blessings, an offering back to God. In vs.13 the phrase “take the cup of salvation” refers to the Old Testament cup of dedication sacrifice.

In Psa.116:16-19 we see the Psalmist 1)give back to God, 2) take a stand for God, 3) testify publicly.

As we reflect on the year 2020, we should be asking ourselves Psa 116:12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

Scriptures used in today’s study:

Mat 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
Mat 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
Mat 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

1Jn 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

Rom 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Psa 116:5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.
Psa 116:6 The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.
Psa 116:7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.
Psa 116:8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
Psa 116:12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

Psa 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Psa 68:19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.

Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Psa 116:12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?
Psa 116:13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.
Psa 116:16 O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
Psa 116:17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.
Psa 116:18 I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people,
Psa 116:19 In the courts of the LORD’S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.
